1944 - Four tornadoes killed 153 persons and caused five million dollars damage in Pennsylvania, West Virginia and Maryland. The tornadoes formed during the evening and moved southeast along parallel paths flattening everything in their way.
The town of Shinnston WV was leveled. The tornado was strong enough to pull streetcar tracks from the ground and twist them, and straw from a horse barn was impaled into a concrete foundation. Until that time it was believed that damaging tornadoes did not travel across mountainous terrain.
There were 105 people killed in West Virginia, 45 persons killed in Pennsylvania and three in Maryland. Total statistics for Pennsylvania, Ohio, Maryland, West Virginia: 153 persons killed; 846 seriously injured; 1,686 families affected; 404 homes destroyed; 821 other buildings damaged.
