1825 - A hurricane struck Long Island NY leveling trees, homes, and causing damage to ships. The early season hurricane, which originated around Cuba, caused major damage along the Atlantic coast from Charleston, SC to New York City. Many ships were lost and hundreds were swept out to sea. Norfolk, Va., was hit for 27 hours straight.

Record Low at RDU: 46, 1988
(The pic is Hurricane Fran in 1996 before it came ashore near Southport. Take notice how sunny and clear it is along the East Coast. This is why Hurricanes were such killers before satellites were around. There was no warning anything was going on until it was too late).
