lycos free email, no longer free?

There's a buzz around Twitter AND I just heard from a co-worker that suddenly, the free e-mail service offered by Lycos has gone up to $19.95 and users are being told they have to pay the $19.95 to access their e-mail accounts!!
Here are three comments pulled from twitter:
- DigitGirl: Without warning Lycos has stopped their free e-mail service and now I have to pay to get my email messages...I don't think so! FU LYCOS!
- sarahreido: Lycos email sucks. it won't let me log in without paying them $20 for an account. I've had a free account for over 5 years. what's up?
- alfee: Lycos is holding my email's hostage. Their asking me to pay $20 to retrieve them!!!!!!!!
Talk about outrage. No warning??
Are any of you with Lycos? Have you heard about this?
