improving us 64 in nash county

The state is announcing some upcoming work on U.S. 64 in Nash County.  Here's the press release:

The N.C. Department of Transportation will soon be putting American Recovery and Reinvestment Act funds to work in Nash County to improve pavement and driving conditions for a major U.S. route in North Carolina.

Transportation Secretary Gene Conti has awarded a $3.3 million contract to S.T. Wooten Corp. of Wilson for resurfacing work along 23.2 miles of U.S. 64 between the Franklin County line and Winstead Avenue (State Road 1613) in Nash County. Work is scheduled to begin as early as July 13, with final completion no later than Nov. 15. Motorists can expect lane closures during the resurfacing work.

The project includes milling and resurfacing of the highway, as well as applying an overlay of permeable asphalt to the travel lanes, plus an additional two feet on each side. Water can flow through this overlay, reducing the amount of spray that typically comes up from other vehicles during wet weather. This helps make the road safer and less likely for tires to hydroplane.

“This project will help create and sustain jobs and provide needed economic development,” said Gov. Bev Perdue.

“This project, combined with the expected resurfacing of another large section of U.S. 64 this year, will create a much improved ride for motorists between Franklin County and Tarboro,” said Ricky Greene, the NCDOT division engineer overseeing the project.

According to the Federal Highway Administration, every $1 million spent on transportation creates 30 jobs, and according to the construction industry, every dollar invested in transportation trickles down into the economy six times.

Hope that's not the same company that first did Cary Parkway.

It's a mess, and the town found out that the asphalt used was sub-standard.

Now they're having to redo it all.

God bless.

Brian, Thanks for the update, this is long over due in Nash Co.

Now if the state would only force the contractors to use citizens of the United States instead of illegal immigrants.

The only thing 64 needs is updated signs between the Rolesville Rd exit in Wake County to 64 Alternate past Rocky Mount. Okay, 64 in Franklin county needs to be resurfaced, but not in Nash county. Fix the signs. People quite often get confused getting on I-95 because of the unclear signage.
