don't make my mistake

I am having a difficult time typing through tears right now. If this story prompts anyone to make sure their pet vaccinations are current, it will be worth it.
Over the weekend my cat killed a bat. I assumed that she was up to date on her rabies vaccinations...after all, we had just been to the vet...hadn't we? Fast forward to this morning when I call to check and they tell me her vaccination is out of date. I was instructed to bring her in immediately for a a booster and then take the bat to animal control so they could send it off to be tested. If the test comes back positive or inconclusive (because of decomp or other factors) my sweet Pumpkin will be put down immediately. Because I could not risk the health of my family I had to leave Pumpkin in quarantine at animal control. They will let me know within 24 hours if she will have to be destroyed.
Please make sure your animals vaccinations are current.

That is a visit to the emergency room the first day, 3rd day, 7th, 14th, and 28th days.
The first visit is a lot of shots in the rear, the first one being immunoglubulin which runs approx. $5000. The following visits are a single shot in the arm.
But a month of feeling sick from the shots is not fun.
