I remember one day when Lucky, Lukey and me were down at the river fishing. Well, you might call it fishing. It was more of a frolicking time of chunking rocks and swinging frum tree lims’. We’d been down there neer uh haff uh day when we got serous ‘bout the fishin’. We wuz usin wurms fer bait an won’t ketchin uh thing. Now nary uh nibble. Nuthin!
There wuz an ole woman uh fishin just a little ways frum where we wuz an she’d pull in a fish ‘bout ever five minits ur so. We drawed straws ta see jes who’d go asst her whut she wuz usin fer bait. When I talked to her (I lost that straw pulling ya see) I cuddn’t hardly unnerstan her. Her lip wuz stuck out with a big plug of chewin backer an she kind uf mumbled. If you can imagin it sounded sumpin like dis:
“Lady whut ya usin fer bait?”
She said, “Ah’m uzin eearppphhh vvvvuuuurrrrmmmms”
Man that sounded like Japanese ta me but I finly fiiiigurd what she said wuz earth worms. I told her we wuz usin worms too but ain’t catchin nuttin.
She mumbled something like this, “Ya gaught ta keeeece ya wwwwuuuurmms varn.”
“Mam, I can’t unnerstan ya. Spit out that baccere and tell me agin.”
She spit that chaw outern her mouth an into her hand and this time I unnerstood her.
She said, “That ain’t backer, it’s worms, you gotta keep your worms warm.”
