hiatal hernia

Published Mar. 4, 2009

So, I posted a couple weeks ago thinking I have an ulcer based on an ER visit. Well- a dr visit and several hundred $$ later, it's a hiatal hernia. I go to a GI Specialist tomorrow. FUN TIMES!! My regular doc sent me to have a barium swallow. We now know it's a hernia with acid reflux. The Doc that did the barium swallow said it looked fine, didn't see a need for surgery- at all. My question- why am I going to a GI Specialist? And will the GI specialist help me with the PAIN! It radiates through my chest? I have prilosec and take it once daily. Hasn't really done anything with the pain...

The GI I went to..can't remember his name he was off Lake Boone Trail though.. he was absolutely useless. Wouldn't listen to a word I said and shoved me out the door. I'm not sure what he could do for you but a GI is the only one I think who should be helping you with what you have going on...

There is nothing they can do for the pain, except surgery. The only things that can be done are things you do, like chew your food really well, don't over-eat, don't eat late or take naps after you eat, and take it easy on the alcohol intake. And probably best to stay away from hot/spicy foods too.

My grandma has one but surgery isn't an option for hers either. She regularly has chest pain. Good luck to you.

Is asking for pain meds an option?

I would say they are sending you to the GI for your acid reflux, to determine how big the ulcer is.

I have a question for you on your hernia. I went to the Dr. last summer because I broke my wrist, while there my lovely husband mentioned to the Dr. that I have problems once in a while where something will bulge out between my ribs. He felt around and said it was probably a hiatal hernia. I never had any x-rays done or anything. He didn't seem concerned at all--but I've been kind of bothered about it. Does your ever bulge out to where you have to, literally, push it back in? I know that as long as I don't move around heavy objects or try to do a sit-up mine is pretty manageable, but it still freaks me out when it happens.

how many mg's of prilosec are you taking?

I went to a GI for mine as well. They prescribe Aciphex, once a day. It was working for the pain you're describing. Once BCBS quit paying for Aciphex, I had to stop taking it - couldn't afford it and nothing else was working. Over time it has gotten better, but for me, the biggest thing that helped was not overeating and limiting the spicy / greasy foods.

I have had this for years. The only thing that works is NEXIUM!! I swear bt it. I could not go thru a day without it. Ask your Dr for this.
