spook-it-to-me: i want proof!
Published Feb. 10, 2009Views: 259
Before my whining fan club shows up, let me state the disclaimers and warnings. If you can’t handle Thor, Amon-Ra, Vishnu, Apollo, etc. being called a fictional creation of man, leave the blog now. If you can’t handle these gods being called spooks, invisible spirits, etc. leave the blog now. If you can’t handle someone who knows the bible well enough to ask the tough questions, leave the blog now. If you can’t handle civil, logical, intelligent debate and discussion, leave the blog now. If you can’t provide any answers, or feel I shouldn’t even be asking my questions, leave the blog now. If you can’t handle the fact that you can’t logically prove a negative, leave the blog now (i.e. this is for all those that demand a proof that God does not exist).
Also, this is a continuation of my previous blog titled, “unambiguous, measurable miracle (prayer answer)”:

It’s been over a year since that one, and not a single believer has stepped up to the task thus far.
Okay, now that that is out of the way, if I’m going to believe gods, spooks, and spirits exist, I want to see proof. I’ve read enough and studied enough history to know that all the gods of the world are creations of man, to explain the unknown, to counter fear, and to provide comfort. It doesn’t work for me, but I understand why some need it. Sure, there might be some unknown space alien or god like creature out in the universe, hiding behind a nebula, that built the earth for some cosmological science project, but my point is that the gods we know by name, such as Thor, Vishnu, Zeus, Jehovah, Pele, Allah, etc. are completely man-made creations.
But it’s obvious that there are those that do believe, or at least claim they believe. They have various reasons as to why they do. They range from they just do, to they have faith, to some disease went away on its own. However, everything I see, read, and know tells me there is no god. Everyday I can read something in the news that reaffirms my position that there is no god, or at least not of the ones man knows by name. So for me to believe in God, I’m going to need to see some concrete, measurable, non-ambiguous proof.
Sounds like the people in the bible also needed proof. The fact that the bible has many incidences of God being proven means I can brush aside the complaints that there’s no way to prove God. In fact, the bible sets the precedence that you can prove God. And what better source to reference than the bible?
So my simple request is for some proof to be given, that I can see, measure, and know that it is godly. Consider Elijah in 1 Kings. He called on God to ignite some soaking wet logs. And God did it so that “this people may know that thou [art] the LORD God”. Can any of you believers do that? I’d even let you soak the logs in gasoline if you think it would help. Elijah also split the Jordan River so that you could walk across on dry ground. This was done more than once in the bible. Can any of you believers to that? How about a small stream instead? Or a puddle? I’d accept anything, even a bowl of soup like in the movie “Bruce Almighty”.
Consider King Hezekiah in 2 Kings. God sent a message that he was going to die. Hezekiah blubbered and prayed so much that God actually changed His mind! This is one of my favorite parts of the bible because it shows that just because God has said something, that doesn’t mean you can’t change His mind about it. But get this, Hezekiah actually had the gall to demand proof from God that he wasn’t going to die! To me, that would be a smiting offense, but God did it. He moved the sun backward 10 degrees in the sky, or the shadow on the ground if you want to be technical. So this story shows that God will provide proof. Any takers on this? I’d even consider a cloud moving back if that’s all you can get God to do.
How about a non-ambiguous healing. Throughout the bible, the sick are healed and the dead are raised. The lame are made to walk and the blind are made to see. An ear was replaced. Jesus did it. His disciples did it. And Paul did it after Jesus was gone. So, can anyone of you believers demonstrate a healing to me? Fix my aching back? Heal one of the amputees returning from Iraq? I’d even accept the healing of a paper cut if that’s all you can manage.
Jesus said, “If ye have faith as a grain of mustard seed, ye shall say unto this mountain, Remove hence to yonder place; and it shall remove; and nothing shall be impossible unto you.” With all the pulling of hair and gnashing of teeth I see every time I refer to a god as a spook, surely one of you believers has the faith of a mustard seed, and thus the ability to move a mountain. But tell you what, I’ll accept a hill. I’d accept a rock. I’d accept a pebble. I’d even accept a grain of sand. Surely one of you faithful believers has enough faith to move a grain of sand.
There are a number of times God/Jesus appeared to people in the bible. Sometimes as an apparition, sometimes as a booming voice. Would it hurt God to appear on Oprah to set the record straight?
You and I both know that I could sit here until the cows come home, but not a single “believer” will ever, Ever, EVER! step forward and provide proof. The real reason is that gods are fictional and so are the miracle stories in the bible. But the believers don’t accept that, so instead of waiting on the proof that I know can NEVER, EVER come, I will instead entertain the various excuses as to why. Give me some good ones, that make sense.
If Hezekiah can demand proof from God, so can we. If it’s all about faith, then why wasn’t it all about faith in the bible? The bottom line is that if proof was given then, there’s absolutely no reason why proof can’t be given now. Unless of course, it was all a ruse. I’m waiting….spook-it-to-me!

I understand that.
I use to believe in Santa Claus, but then I had lots of proof for that one (though it turns out it was false). But when it comes to Pele the Volcano god, I just don’t believe. Can’t make myself believe. Like Hezekiah in the bible, I want God to show me proof.

but as to a reason for blogs like this - well, many people here like to discuss things. and be challenged and challenge others. like debate pro and con on Torture. Like debate on pro and con of stimulus bill.
I think the blogs we write AND our comments in other people's blogs say a lot about us.

Curiosity. I like to see how people think, or as it seems in religion, not think too much about it. Plus, what if they are right?! Given I can’t just make myself believe, I want some proof. Just like Hezekiah. Wonder why he wanted proof that God was keep His word?

That’s probably one of the best and most honest answers I’ve seen in quite a while.

Actually, as a Christian, I think you SHOULD preach to me. But that’s probably just my Pentecostal upbringing.
