digital camera help

Published Jan 21, 2009

Yesterday while throwing a snowballs at my son and my dad, I dropped my digital camera in the snow :/

I didn't realize it had slipped off my arm until I had already walked away a bit from where I had been standing.  We finally found it after about 20 minutes of searching.  It worked for about 4 more pictures before it stopped completely.  It is  now "dead as a doornail."  I already tried drying it out but it is still dead.

Now...I need help!  What is the best digital camera out there for the price?  I take a lot of pictures.  I've always had HP ones and I wouldn't be against another one, but I'm having troubles finding any that look good.

I found one on bestbuy.com that I really like.  It's a Nikon .

Anyone out there know of the BEST quality for the price camera?  I would appreciate any advice!

sony cybershots are great too

I purchased a Canon PowerShot SD750 for about $140. It is my first digital camera and easy to use. I let my 8 year old take a few pictures, and they look great. I take lots of pictures at school and home. It has been a great camera for me.

The only negative that I could find while researching is that the viewer area gets smudged easily. It's not a major issue, though. Oh, and I had to go out to get a bigger memory chip. The one included was way too small.

jolly about 2 yrs aGO,i love it

Thanks Jolly Roger...I still have my old HP camera. It still works. It was just old. My cousin's toddler even dropped in on a concrete floor not long after I got it and it never stopped working. I just upgraded to the one I dropped in the snow a couple years ago. I'm an HP kinda girl. HP printer, laptop and camera (till yesterday of course)

my nikon can hold up to 1k in pics but i can make images larger to where it holds less

david, the replacement battery for it is about 40 bucks. Probably just need to get a new one instead of doing that. I doubt it will ever be the same. It was so cold and wet by the time I found it.

"DONT EVER leave a digital camera out in frigid temps"

My Nikon D2X did just fine yesterday. But it's far from a hand-held consumer class digital.

If I were looking to replace my wife's camera I would probably get her another Panasonic Lumix. It uses Zeiss lenses like Sony, but at a far better price. I've seen them for around $100 at Best Buy for their 8MP version.

I like the Canon's although I have the S70, no fancy lenses but does great for any and all my pics both on land and while diving (with a housing of course). Got all mine on ebay (have had several now) for great price. there is a good website that give reviews of the digital cameras out there and I believe it's http://www.steves-digicams.com/ actually I know that's it. Good luck. Also you never know, it may revive itself in a few days after completely drying out. Take out batteries and card-which I'm sure you have done-then just leave it open someplace safe and dry. Might be surprised!

charles i would never leave my nikon out, first i cant afford another slr camera, lol but it seems to run slower for a minutes after being in the cold

I bought myself an Olympus FE-20 over the holidays for 99.00 on sale. I bought it just so I can have a camera with me at all times and I don't have to carry my big one around with me. I've been really happy with it and a lot of the pics that I have and will be adding to my snow gallery were taken with this camera. :)

I love the Canon. I have had 3--they are easy to use and the pictures look great!

Thanks Hawk_fan. Appreciate your advice!

builder i need to do that too, so many times I dont want to lug my camera bag around with all my lenses, it would be nice just to have a point and shoot

You might try putting the camera in the oven at the lowest temp you can set it, around 100 degrees, and try to cook the moisture out, for about 4 hours. I have washed and dried much more expensive equipment than a camera with no problems. However this procedure is one you do at your own risk. If your goal is a new camera I am in the dark as to which is best.

I sure didn't intend to leave mine in the car trunk either when cold..........it was overlooked when getting luggage out while visiting family.

I got tired of keeping up with the camera bag, lenses, worrying about someone stealing it, etc Sassy. It just made life easier on me is all.

I lost one in the snow at a race about 3 years ago :( I hadn't even had it that long. But I have another it isn't as good as the one I lost but it goes with me everywhere. I think it is a samsung but don't hold me to that. I have a dsl that is a sony and it take awesome pics but it doesn't go everywhere with me. It gets to be a pain to drag it change lenses etc. Just get a cheap one.

I forgot to add, mine has video as well and that comes in handy at times.....

I love my D90 but if you don't want something like that to carry around the coolpix cameras are supposed to be nice.

I bet I know where you lost it Red! heehee ;) I'm headed out....

*POOF*

We have a couple of Sony cybershots in this household, and a Canon Digital Rebel XTI.

I'm thinking the Cybershot line would be good for you. We've been very satisfied with ours (I have one, and my son just got one recently).

The Canon is awesome, but not exactly a point and shoot... or cheap.

Just a suggestion; Remove the battery and let the camera sit for several days(at least 24 hours) inside. This will allow the electronics to dry out without subjecting the camera to extreme heat. By removing the battery, this will allow the capacitors to completely discharge.

If the battery got wet at all, I would suggest a new one.

This may work if nothing got "ZAPPED" by the moisture being present.... and it's cheaper that purchasing a new camera.

*hangs head*

I took the battery out yesterday when we got home to let it dry out. I just tried to put it back in since it's been over 24 hours since I lost it in the snow. Well...when you put the battery in, there is this little latch that closes around it and holds it in. The little blue latch broke off.

*sigh*

I tried holding the battery in with my hand and turning it on and "nothing." Even if the camera itself still worked, the battery latch is broken.

Thank you everyone for your advice. There are so many good cameras out there. It's hard to make a decision!

That battery latch could be a separate problem (part of a circuit?).

In any case, I would remove battery/card and put the camera somewhere "warm" and safe for a couple of days. You might get a pleasant surprise...unless there was real water damage.

A good trick is on the floor near refrigerator "exhaust" - warm but not too warm with air flow - just don't step on the doggone thing!!

I have a Sony Cybershot and I LOVE IT!!! I take a TON of pictures and it is great.

You are looking for point and shoot, nothing fancy. Sony was a GREAT camera for me. I shot over 10,000 shots on it, still works. I now went to my higher end camera (Canon SLR). I don't recomend This level of camera unless you are VERY serious.

Before you throw it out, did you try emptying out the memory stick, battery/s and placing the thing in a SEALABLE bag with SILICA bags or the capsuls we get with medications?? Let it sit for a few days (maybe a week or so and let it warm up natrually (not on a heater or in the microwave) to try and remove the moisture. put in some DRY cotton cleaning masses to absorb moisture and replace them out every couple of days. (see where I am heading?)

See if that helps dry out the moisture in the camera.

(FE has the right type of idea)

The problem is not the water as much as the contaimnents it has in it (dirt, sand).

DO THAT before spending any money.

In the end if those efforts fail, remember it was not waterproof.
