i need doggie advice!

I need some GOLO advice.
We have a basset hound mix that we've had for 9 1/2 years. We got him as a puppy. He's been a great dog. He listens well, he's grown up with my children. He's never jumped and knocked my children down. He's been my other baby for all this time.
The first of December we adopted a full blooded basset hound from the local pound. He's very young and very playful. We've had him fixed, last week, and tried to keep them separate and only let them play together when we're home.
There's been a lot of problems with our older dog. He's older, not playful, and very jealous of the new dog. In the last few days he's become more aggressive with the new dog. Never aggressive to us, just the new dog. Earlier this week they were fighting so bad I thought I was going to have to call someone to help me break them up. Tonight it got ugly. He attacked the new dog and wouldn't let go. Blood is everywhere. We're really not sure how badly the new dog is hurt. My husband finally got them apart and put the new dog in his pen. I was screaming, hollering, beating them with sticks, nothing worked. When my hubby put the new dog in the pen, I stayed with the old one. He never barked, growled, or attempted to bite me. My hubby came over and grabbed him by the back of the neck, never hurting him. He snarled and growled at my husband. If I hadn't been there, I have no doubt my husband would have shot and killed him.
I'm heart broken. One of them has to go. I'm now afraid he may try to hurt one of us, and I certainly can't let them out together.
Any advice? I don't know what to do. Thanks!

This is going to sound dumb, but the older dog gave you the best years of his life. And young dogs do not expect to be alpha males at a young age in the wild.
I would not allow the young dog to be truly maimed, but I would let the 2 dogs try to establish their pecking order. I know it will be hard to watch.

Maybe he is the one who should go!
I feel very sorry for the older dog. He was there first, after all and has grown up with everyone.
You did a wonderful thing, adopting from a shelter and the new dog deserves a chance too.
I'm trying to think what I would do, or how I would handle it, if this happened to me. I know I would NOT, absolutely, positively, without a doubt, get rid of the old dog. That's a no-brainer.
Good luck. I'm sorry this has happened and again, it's people like you, who are saving lives by adopting a shelter dog. I'm sure you'll get some good advice. PLEASE, do not get rid of the older dog. He loves you!!!!!
