free at last, free at last, or are we?
Published Dec. 2, 2008How many of us are free? Free to walk the streets of our hometown, day or night, free to let our children roam and play on their own?
How many people are prisoners in their own towns, where they are afraid to walk the sidewalks, stroll the parks, drive any street? Are your children free to walk around the block, over ot the stores? Or, are they prisoner to the thought of gangs, crooks, perverts and thugs?
People complain about Homeland security at the airports, but no one is saying anything about the fear of going about freely in one's home town. How many of our rights have we given up, not by federal regulation, but by our own common sense and fear?
There are a lot of freedoms our fears have taken:
* picking up hitchhikers
* children talking to strangers, and strangers talking to children
* leave your key in your car or leave your home unlocked
* say what you think wherever you are knowing you have that right

But, do not bring the TSA into this picture. Anybody who flies regularly know very well that those airport security measures are useless. May I repeat, absolutely useless. It is trivial for somebody who wants to take something to do so. But, terrorists are not likely interested in doing the same thing again. For sure, the passengers will not just sit there. I think the planes are safe enough with basic searches for guns and explosives. The rest is useless and will not work.
What freedoms concern me most: the fact that we do not have liberty to do what we want. NC, more than many states, likes to tell people how to behave and exceptions are "criminals". Lose your job, fail to pay taxes on your house, and NC will promptly throw you and your family into the street.
This is free?

There have been so many rediculous law suits over someone being offended - where if they could have just walked away, ignored it or not listened, they wouldn't have to be offeded at all. Some of it is legitamate. But MOST of it is not.
NOW - people in society walk on eggshells. The Consitution grants me the right to freedom of speech. But when I'm in constant fear of saying something that would "offend" someone (who is just to 'tarded or immature to just 'get over it") and getting sued over it... Then I'm not free and I've lost my freedom of speech. From the sheer fact that I'm afraid of saying the wrong thing, or that what I'll say be misconstrued and I'll end up in a court room.

My children have never known that freedom. I have kept tabs on them, they have had to check back in with me or call from wherever they were every few hours so that I know they are ok - even today.
