where do you hide your gifts?

Published Dec. 2, 2008

Do you remember the scene from National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation where Clark finds those old gifts stuffed in the chimney in the attic? My mom experienced that, herself, last year when she hid one of my gifts. She gave it to me about 2 weeks after Christmas when she finally found it!

When I was a kid, my sister and I would always go on a scavenger hunt through the house in the weeks before Christmas trying to find those secret hiding places for Christmas gifts. One year, we successfully found one of those 3-in-1 pool table things for kids hidden in my parents' closet. Oops!

Another year, my mom hid something in the linen closet by the bathroom under a pile of bathmats, but she caught us before we could dig all the bathmats out. Oops!

We have all found our own gifts hidden somewhere in our own houses at least one time in our lives. What do you do? Do you keep it a secret, or do you let the person know you found the gift? Does it give you incentive to buy something extra to "one-up" the person's gift? How do you react?

On the flip-side, how do you determine a "good" hiding place? Do you think somebody has ever found YOUR secret hiding place before?

my wife has my gifts hidden in her closet. i know they're there but i dont look. i like to kid with her though, and i always start throwing out guesses and telling her we should open our presents early. I hide her stuff in my car until it's wrapped, and my sons gifts will be kept somewhere else, b/c i know i used to snoop big time as a kid!

I usually keep my kids presents at work, and they know this... so, they don't even look for any. Last year I decided to keep them in the house.... they were under my bed (have one of those that's 2 miles off the floor LOL). They had no clue they were all under there.

I hide my gifts at my sister's house and she hides her gifts at my house. LOL! We actually did this over the weekend. My nephew is going to be a wild child when he learns that he has a Wii and his auntie (Me) has already been playing it!!!! LOL. I'm trying to make sure I learn to play the game far better than him so that I can beat him. He's 8 and can beat my 34 yr old husband (the video game wizard) in a video game. LOL.

I hide some at work, so when my wife was bringing the kids for lunch I was lucky a coworker reminded me and we stashed it in her office. So she is looking for a napkin and I tell her if I have any they would be in the second drawer. None there so she checks the top drawer and notices a reciept for the store she works at part-time... for her gift. She still claims she didn't read it.

My daughter is pretty good at not looking for them. I don't leave her alone long enough. ;-) Usually I put them in my closet and wrap them as soon as possible.

I was the worst for finding gifts. I knew just how to untape a box so no one knew. The only year I did not find the gifts, my mom left them in the trunk of the car. She had a 1972 Volkswagon squareback. Like a station wagon with the front trunk like a Beetle. I was so scared I wasn't getting anything that year. LOL

A few years ago my wife came in unexpectantly and I was in the kitchen with 3 gifts in my hands. So me, being the quick thinker that I am, put them in the oven. After thinking about it, that was the perfect place b/c I knew they were safe in there. I went back to get them 3 days later. printrman GOLO member since August 13, 2007 December 2, 2008 8:00 a.m. Report abuse

yea thats a pretty safe spot aorund our house too, she aint going near that oven its too much like work.

my fiance is so lazy i just hide them behind the couch. she dosent even try to look, even though she says she does, so i hide them in plain sight.

We ALWAYS found our gifts. ALWAYS! They were usualy in the attic. Then we would try to act all supprised Christmas morning, to keep from hurting mama's feelings. She would even wrap them before she hid them. But, we would carefuly cut the tape at one end of the package, see what was inside, and put new tape evenly over the tape we had cut. One year, mama put different names on the packages. My brother was SO pizzed when he peeked in one of his boxes and saw a smurf alarm clock. He was about 15 then. The clock was really mine. LOL! Mama got us good that year. I usualy keep the kifts hidden in the trunks of my cars, and locked in the storage bldg behind the house.

I hate to know what i am getting so I don't look. I have wrapped the presents I have bought thus far except two for my daughter and they are at Grandma's house!
