my kids loved it
Published Dec. 1, 2008If you're looking for another children's book to give as a gift this year, see if you find this modern "classic" tale. My kids loved it when they were small, and now at 23 and 25 years old, they still smile if I mention the title as a teasing phrase. They immediately recount how it scared them, or they had nightmares because of it...;) But if the book had been so terrible, why would they both now remember it with nothing but grins and each always has some individual recollection of how it made them jump at things that go bump in the night!
In my mind it's kind of like the Aesop's Fables or Brothers Grimm Fairy Tales. The original stories were not the sugar coated water down morality plays that they have become for our politically correct young ones. Those old stories were really the kinds of tales that would make you lay awake at night, just knowing the sound you heard outside wasn't just a branch from the too close oak tree, but rather the long blood encrusted nails of some kind of child eating goblin that had finally found you and was scant moments away from slipping through the window on it's way to gobble you up. And yet most of us as kids loved those stories. Sigh...the innocence of youth.
Anyway, if you want a "different" childrens book to round out your giving list, see if you can't find "Not Now Bernard" to put the fear in your favorite nephews or nieces. It's really not a terribly frightening book, and most children actually laugh and giggle at the story as you read it aloud to the very young, or they devour it themselves as they get more confidence at the enjoyment of a good book.

My second grader has discovered the Geronimo Stilton series. It has all sorts of horrible mouse puns. It's great to hear her laughing as she reads.
