boc - don't fear the reaper revealed
Published Dec. 1, 2008***Repost due to BOC conversation from another blog
Probably everyone has had an assignment in an English class to interpret a poem. To break it down to find the subtle meanings. You can do the same with most song lyrics. Most are just what they appear to be and express their ideas or points very directly, but when I was listening to a song that I had heard literally thousands to times, I noticed a hidden meaning underneath the words.
You may have already realized what I am about to say and if so then please don’t think I am to slow.
The song by Blue Oyster Cult – Don’t Fear the Reaper
Now in many classical works of literature flying is an allegory to sex and death is used as an allegory to the female orgasm.
Now look at these lyrics from the song:
Come on baby...don't fear the reaper
Baby take my hand...don't fear the reaper
We'll be able to fly...don't fear the reaper
Baby I'm your man...
As I listened to this song with an understanding of the allegories the song is using it becomes clear that the song is about a young girl who ultimately is giving up her virginity to a guy.
You can see from the lyrics above that they guy is making his case to have sex with the girl. He goes even further to point out how thousands of men and women do it every day. The verse the love of two is one could also be referring to the beast with two backs or in other words the union of man and woman during sex.
Then finally in the last verse, she relents to his request and has sex.
The curtains flew then he appeared...saying don't be afraid
Come on baby...and she had no fear
And she ran to him...then they started to fly
They looked backward and said goodby...she had become like they are
She had taken his hand...she had become like they are
Come on baby...don't fear the reaper
So it turns out this entire song is about the coming of age of a young girl. I also now feel pretty certain that one or more of the members of Blue Oyster Cult had the benefits of a classical education.
See for yourself – Lyrics below:
All our times have come
Here but now they're gone
Seasons don't fear the reaper
Nor do the wind, the sun or the rain..we can be like they are
Come on baby...don't fear the reaper
Baby take my hand...don't fear the reaper
We'll be able to fly...don't fear the reaper
Baby I'm your man...
Valentine is done
Here but now they're gone
Romeo and Juliet
Are together in eternity...Romeo and Juliet
40,000 men and women everyday...Like Romeo and Juliet
40,000 men and women everyday...Redefine happiness
Another 40,000 coming everyday...We can be like they are
Come on baby...don't fear the reaper
Baby take my hand...don't fear the reaper
We'll be able to fly...don't fear the reaper
Baby I'm your man...
Love of two is one
Here but now they're gone
Came the last night of sadness
And it was clear she couldn't go on
Then the door was open and the wind appeared
The candles blew then disappeared
The curtains flew then he appeared...saying don't be afraid
Come on baby...and she had no fear
And she ran to him...then they started to fly
They looked backward and said goodby...she had become like they are
She had taken his hand...she had become like they are
Come on baby...don't fear the reaper

"that's the way uh huh uh huh...I like it...uh huh uh huh... "
I always loved the title of BOC's '75 live album:
"On Your Feet, or on Your Knees!" ;-)

I was in Fayettenam, it was back in the day of the green lasers, the lead singer was standing at the end of the stage with his afro hair and very dark aviator sunglasses, there was a HUGE disco ball over the heads of the crowd, he turned that laser on to the disco ball and it looked like it shot out a million sparks, like a blow torch cutting through metal.
My favorite song is: "JOAN CRAWFORD" http://www.lyricstime.com/blue-oyster-cult-joan-crawford-lyrics.html
