what was that "thud" ?

Ok - so last night, there's a "thud" - which is not an entirely unusual sound for the funny farm that is our home. Well, hubby & I were already asleep, so it must have been pretty late since we went to bed wayyy past my 9:00 bedtime last night.
My dad goes to investigate the "thud" because it was uncharacteristically followed by the barking of 7 VERY upset doggies - one that has 8 babies to protect.
And...on top of the dually (that's a truck - like a pretty big one), he finds one of our bantam roosters - playing dead. Now, keep in mind that the dually is parked some 500 - 600 feet from the bantams' roost. So - how did a 1 lb. chicken cause that loud of a "thud" - and...how did he get all the way over there. Yes - they can fly, but 500 feet in the wind & rain? So, dad thinks the rooster is dead - not playing dead - but for-real dead. He reaches for him and off he flies - all the way back to the barn, but instead of going up to his roost, he crashes into the side of the barn. Then scoots under the hay access doors into the hay storage, where he apparently spent the night and re-joined his bantam family this morning.
Strange! Anyone have any idea what might have planted a playing-dead bantam rooster on top of our truck in the late hours of the night?
