skating - javajoe's picture of the day for 11/29/08

I cannot rollerblade. I cannot ice skate. I cannot stand upright without my feet planted firmly onto the ground.

I've always wished I could at least stand up on wheels or on a blade, but I never have. Do you rollerblade or ice skate? When did you learn, how did you learn, and what's the secret to not busting your rear-end?

I just fixed me a gooood Turkey sandwich, now it's time to get some sleep. Have a good night, all.

Sandra: I marvel at those people who can walk down stairs without looking at their feet to see where they are stepping! Boggles my mind.

joe, I'm afraid I will have to sit back on the bench with you...I can barely walk on firm land without tripping in my own feet - skating is a project for the next life.

I still have my skates from the 70's, but haven't used them in YEARS. I always enjoyed skating, but would probably fall and break something if I tried now! I was taught to skate by a really cute guy at the skating ring long ago and far away! Good "ice" breaker, even though it was roller skating!

My Mom taught me to Roller skate when I was about 6 yrs. old, boy, could she skate! She could ice skate also, but I never learned how. My secret to not busting my but was to watch out for other people. Even as an adult, I like to roller skate, used to have a girl's night out with the ladies I worked with. A great way to spend time away from work and get some exercise also.

Reminds me of a teacher who told me the story of when she took her grandaughter to the skating rink. Her grandaughter and all the 3-5 year olds were out on the rink zooming around going 100mph around the place, and there my teacher was holding onto the rails, knees shaking, sweat dripping, barely inching along. She hit the ground, eventually, but then one of the 4-5 year old kids came up to her and helped her up, then said he would show her how to skate. If I hit the ground, they'd be calling an ambulance.

I learned to rollerskate first at a young age. Just by practice. Go around hang on the wall or rail etc. I probably busted my azz a few times I can't remember I was young! Then it was on to ice skating. It was easier probably since I knew how to rollerskate. But harder on your ankles. Again probably fell can't remember. Held on to the side until I "got it" I also took some lessons after awhile. Rollerbading is the hardest to me. It might be because the skates I bough hurt my feet? I was like 20 something too when I tried this. Nothing at all like roller or ice skating to me. You just have to get out there and practice and try. Maybe you bust you rear a few times. Everyone has at some point.

wear your skates around the house for a few days
