Any one ahave receipt for suet? have the urge to assist the birds this year.

You can add flour, peanut butter, nuts, seeds, carrots, etc. This is a great family project.

I just buy the suet cakes already made. No more than they cost, it's cheaper than trying to make you own and a lot less mess. :)

I used to mix lard, seed, and something else in bih pans. The dogs would not leave it alone. I will see if I can find the recipe. I think the animals will appreciate anything.

Amy, when I lived in a very old house out in the country, I got up one morning and, since my husband was in the bathroom off the bedroom, I went to the one in the back hallway. Mind you, I was half asleep - at least I was until I looked up and there, on top of the medicine cabinet was a possum. And the dang thing *hissed* at me. It had apparently come in the dog door, attracted by the dogs' and cats' food. My husband finally chased it out, but a few days later it was back - this time I found it in the washing machine when I went to put some laundry in. It returned several times before we finally got rid of it.

Neither the three bulldogs nor the three cats we had at the time paid the slightest attention to it.

Will trade one really fluffy oppossum for your squirrels! That danged thing scares me everytime I go out to walk my dog. He eats the cat foot, must be good stuff, he's all shiny and fluffy and fat.

oh yeah, I have Rocky raccoon too. I buy some cheap hot dogs and throw out leftover pizza, now he leaves the bird feeder alone. I don't throw any food away, not even a banana peel...but I carry some further away from the condo. It all gets gone.

I must have the infamous Vandal Squirrels. Until last year they basically destroyed two of my feeders. Had to discard both. But...they met the just reward for their criminal actions. My suet boxes kept getting torn down also, I finally "C" clamped them to metal flower pot holders afixxed to the trees, and they were still bent and mashed out of shape. I blamed the squirrels..the ones I hadn't sent to the Great Squrrel in the Sky...I was wrong...it was a raccoon. Snuck up one night while I was out on the deck and started trying to rip the suet boxes down again. .177 didn't kill him, but it discouraged him from returning.

I must have the most unusual squirrels around. My squirrels are not destructive at all. I have 6 feeders and some are over 18 years old and other than being weathered, they are in pretty good shape still.

Thanks to a Cooper's Hawk, I have learned that the squirrels are not the ones eating all of the feed around here anyway... it is the birds. When the Cooper's Hawk shows up, the birds all leave and the squirrels stay. We can go at least 4 days without having to refill out feeders when the hawk is here. But when the birds return, it is back to filling all 6 every single day.

that true jack, takes awhile for them to "tame" down. Suet brings a wide range of birds in. It amazes me to watch them "share".
