would you rather it be the other way around?
Published Nov. 28, 2008Since some of us on here feel that its fun to bash the police, ridicule, and hope for the worst for an officer - perhaps some statistical data may aprise you as to why we do the things that we DO NOT want to do, and only as a last resort. As for the officers of FPD, Cumberland County, and the State of NC as a whole - I would follow every one of you through hell with a butterknife if you asked me to. The reason for the drop in officer deaths is simple - thugs are now starting to realize that if you shoot at us WE WILL DEFEND OURSELVES and all others that we swore to protect. Trust me when I say that in the end we would much rather prefer that it ended differently. However, we're done playing with you. Those of you that call for the officers termination, or scream "cover-up" one thing is perfectly clear - you were not there.
Police officer deaths plunged to their lowest midyear total in 43 years after an unusually deadly year for law enforcement officers, says a report released today by a national police advocacy group.
The review reflects declines in all major categories of officer fatalities, including traffic accidents and shootings, the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund found.
Overall deaths declined from 100 to 59 in the first six months of 2007 compared to the same period this year. The number of overall deaths is the lowest since 1965, when 55 officers were killed.
Midyear shooting deaths fell from 38 in 2007 to 21 this year, the lowest number since 1960, when 18 officers were killed by gunfire.

I don't intend for it to be a demeaning attitude, and as I said, I always present a polite and cordial face to the officer who's stopped me, but I simply see it as being a case of a line that you cross at your peril. It's not my place to accommodate you beyond basic civility, and arrogance on your part is definitely crossing an unacceptable line IMO.

It's not a cellphone. It's an actual tape recorder with an actual little tape in it. It's a little difficult to assert that I'd be doing anything besides recording with it.
"You may think it a hard stance, but the fact is that I'm going home at the end of my shift."
I understand that, and respect it, but you also have to understand that my sole concern is me and how I may be inconvenienced or mistreated. I'll be congenial and polite, and simply expect the same in return. I'm not accustomed to being dictated to, by anyone, and tend to view it negatively if anyone presumes to try to order me around. I expect to be asked, politely.

See, I feel differently about that. You're tasked with doing a job, but you aren't granted any degree of authority over me that enables you to force me to do anything as long as I am being cooperative and congenial about it.
You're not superior to me by virtue of your badge in the slightest way, and you're expected to demonstrate a degree of respect. You're a public employee. You work for me. I don't work for you. I will cooperate, but if you're expecting mindless obedience and me tolerating whatever attitude you feel motivated to throw in my direction, you're in for a shock. As long as you're respectful, I'm respectful.

The lights inside the vehicle are on, and I will have already informed the officer that I will be taping and offered him an opportunity to inspect the tape recorder if he feels he needs to. Given that, and given the recording equipment in your own vehicle, you'd have a difficult time asserting that you viewed it as being threatening.
As I said, I have respect for LEO's, but I will not be intimidated by them. I extend politeness and expect the same in return. You need to realize that the badge doesn't give you any special license to be rude or abrasive or domineering in any way, and as a taxpayer, I will go after your job if you are any of those things to me. It's really that simple.

Because it's pretty likely that if I'm asked to exit my vehicle that arrest or detention of some sort is going to be involved, and at that point, the interaction has become adversarial. In that scenario, I want my attorney involved as early as possible in order to protect my interests.
