house-horses, home at last
Published Nov. 27, 2008Well, we finally did it. We got the pasture as ready as possible for right now and we moved the horses. The pasture is not nearly big enough for them (or at least as big as I want it for them), but with plenty of hay, it'll do until we can expand it. They seem happy at least.
I was very nervous about moving Nokona. He's young and hasn't had much training. I've done some basic ground work with him and with my manner of training, it usually lasts even if there is a lag in training. But he's never been in a trailer and he's never been off the farm before Tuesday. We decided to move three horses on Monday and spend the entire day Tuesday working with Nokona. We didn't want to rush him and/or traumatize him (physically or mentally). We did give him a mild sedative, just to knock the edge off but not make him 'loopy.' With the help of a friend, we coaxed him onto the trailer, one small step at a time. He finally loaded and we fed him there. He travelled well and when we reached the land, he was calm, curious, relaxed and content to stay in the trailer. We made sure he'd have room to turn around in the trailer to unload. It's much easier the first time to exit by going forward. He did GREAT! I was so happy!
We finished moving the rest of the horses w/o incident. Rocky, our oldest guy is not looking great. He just is not processing his food and he's dropping weight. We've got a plan to build him back up and so far, after only 3 days, he's already looking much better. His eyes are bright. His coat is shining up. And he just seems happier and looks like he feels better. I think he'll be fine!
We have an appt with the farrier on Friday. They'll get their "pedicures" and REALLY feel good. Just like us getting new shoes, for horses getting a good trim feels GOOD!
Now that the horses are settled, we can begin focussing on the inside of the house again. While we were busy with the animals, we had someone finishing the dry wall for us. The walls are all finished and the primer coat is applied. Just a few small areas of touch up and we are finally ready to paint the walls. We'll begin this weekend.
That's the latest from me. Hope everyone has a wonderful Thanksgiving! I'm definitely thankful for everything!!!
Oops, I forgot to add the link to the image gallery of all the horses. http://www.wral.com/golo/image_gallery/4039529/

I date a lady that has three horses. I went to the huge Fox Hunt here in Southern Pines yesterday. What an event. They had over 100 horses in all divisions. At least 50 that did the jumping. Probably over 1200 people attended. It has been here for over 50 years.
I'm learning about the horses. I know that she works many hours to care for hers. I don't think that I could do what she does, but she has been around horses all of her life. Anyway, I can tell by what you have written that you truly love your animals.
Congratulations on your move.
