are you worried about losing your job?

Hello GOLO:

I am becoming increasingly disheartened by the sheer number of people losing their jobs. Every blog I see about it posted here breaks my heart and the news continues. I just learned of more massive layoffs at my old employer, and given that I'm from Detroit, I know many many people who have been affected by the auto industry woes.

So what practical advice can we offer people who are finding themselves back in the job market?  If you're in that position, what steps are you taking to find employment?

What if you haven't been in the job market for 20 years? Then what?

Are you worried about losing your job?

Let's use this space to talk about everything from starting your own business to networking to the importance of saving for a rainy day.

We're bound to offer up something helpful to others.

Just remember! The military is still hiring! :D

I made a personal vow "NEVER TO BE LAID OFF AGAIN"....I am using this commitment to start a new venture.

It is difficult to go from the security of a steady paycheck, health benefits, and hope for the future to fear, worry, anxiety, no money, debts to be paid, and medicines to buy.

Like many, I have reverted to selling things that my prior successes had allowed me just to keep the hounds at bay and the lights turned on.

We still have darker days ahead IMO, and the lives of thousands are and will change dramatically. I for one see this as a turning point, a pivotal moment for us all.

I am liquidating many many things, and with each sale I feel a weight of worry lifted off my shoulders. I am taking my grandmothers advice for the first time regarding her views towards money.

She was a survivor of the first great depression and she taught me many things about doing without. I wish I would have heeded her advice many many years ago.

"This too shall pass"...when is the biggest question

I once thought I'd never have to worry about losing my job. With the way things are going, I'm now happy to have a job. I've thought about moving within my company (which is all over the US), but have discovered there are places where no jobs are available. That is a direct result of this recession. My company has taken steps to control expenses, and has cut some corporate office jobs. Once dependable raises are now questionable. Customary bonuses are now scarce. It makes me wonder just where it will stop.

I actually lost my job Dec 31 and I had been worried about it til it happened..... Now, I am happier than I have been in years!! I never realized how draining it was and how miserable I was til I was out. Now, I look at it as a blessing!!! I am starting a new life it feels like, and it feels GREAT!!!

What I find disturbing are those that continuously post on Golo about how the media and the President are blowing this all out of proportion and repeatedly state its just "not as bad as they say". This is the exact same ignorance that got us where we are now. The bottom line is unemployment is high and will likely climb to about 11%. The numbers don't lie. People are not filing for unemployment for fun. People ARE loosing jobs at a significant rate. Now 11% may not sound like a lot, but when you have people who live all around you out of work, and you have a majority of your friends and family out of work it should send a message that something is wrong. The other comment of ignorance is that some how the President is to blame and all that voted for him are to blame. First, what are you blaming the president for if its "not that as bad as they say". Secondly, when was the last time you saw this country change direction in 1 month on ANY issue? The numbers are real, and the problem is

Well unfortunately you can now add me to the casuality list of not working full time.
