are you worried about losing your job?

Published Nov 21, 2008

Hello GOLO:

I am becoming increasingly disheartened by the sheer number of people losing their jobs. Every blog I see about it posted here breaks my heart and the news continues. I just learned of more massive layoffs at my old employer, and given that I'm from Detroit, I know many many people who have been affected by the auto industry woes.

So what practical advice can we offer people who are finding themselves back in the job market?  If you're in that position, what steps are you taking to find employment?

What if you haven't been in the job market for 20 years? Then what?

Are you worried about losing your job?

Let's use this space to talk about everything from starting your own business to networking to the importance of saving for a rainy day.

We're bound to offer up something helpful to others.

I write resumes, and I have been busier in the past 6 months, than i EVER have. I have seen so many people with great skills and experience-from all across the country- looking for something- ANYTHING to help them through this time. While it may be good for me- it is disconcerting to see so very many people unemployed.

It used to be that most of the resumes i did were for people looking to change jobs. Now, its people looking for ANY job. I had one client with an MBA and over 15 years of high level management expereince applying for secretarial positions! That is disturbing.

Last year at this time, business all but stopped for me. People were busy getting ready for the holidays, shopping for gifts, traveling- whatever. They were not thinking about their job, or finding a job, or what their resume looked like. This year is a whole different story!

my thoughts and prayers go out to all of you looking for work or facing layoffs, or just stressed about possible layoffs!

I feel pretty secure in my teaching position because I am labeled "highly qualified" on my license and because I teach a tested area. I worry about some of the elective programs though- Music, Band, Art, Technology- those areas are bound to suffer with the state wanting us to return money

I have what is called.. "incredible job security" I could get reprimanded .. leading up to and including termination.. but I would have to really screw up.. I guess I'm lucky.. in a way.. I don't think I could ever get laid off..

Been on the same job, upward through different departments and positions, since 1981. Do I worry about job security? Constantly. I've seen far better people than me lose their jobs here and the fear is like a gnawing worm that eats at my insides each day. But I try not to worry about the things that I have no control over and try to do better at those things which I do have some control over. And if worse comes to worse, I can only hope I go out with the same grace that I have seen others walk through the gate with.

my husband and i own our own business... we're cool

khaki...don't ya hate that? How can you be overqualified? Don't people realize that the reason they can't get the person they want for the postition is because they are aiming too low? They want knowledge at minimum wage. Rather than make it your fault for being overqualified, they should admit that they can't or won't afford to hire someone of your knowledge, at your worth.

Am I worried about my job...It crosses my mind because I see it all around me. I've been told that I am not allowed to quit, and cannot be fired, so I feel secure that I am needed, and wanted in the services I provide. If I did lose my job(s), I think I am well rounded enough that I could fall into something, even if it is not my "norm".

My prayers are with those searching. My advise to them would be broaden your horizons. Don't corner yourself in the market. Don't limit yourself to things you *know* you can do. You may surprise yourself.

To all those that are searching for work with little results, my sincerest thughts and hopes for you finding a great job that wants you badly!! If you look, and are able, there are other areas of the country that are still doing OK economically. While this is a terrible place to be out of work and not really know anyone, Alaska still has a pretty good economy. If one looks at the newspapers here, there are jobs being offered. I would caution people NOT to come here if you do not have a job, or about 5-10K to get established. If you were fortunate enough to get a good job, you could probably come here for a couple K and get going. Good Luck in hunting for jobs in this horrible economy.

I am always worried, because I have been unemployed before and it's not a good feeling. For anyone that is motivated, I hear the Raleigh Police Dept has somewhere between 70 and 100 openings! :)

Just because you have a "contract" to work for years to come doesn't mean much these days. They can and will break the contract, buy them out, etc if they need to? It never hurts to have some kind of backup plan.................

I'm not worried at all. My full time job is in Health Care. People will always get sick. The job can't get moved over seas. I think that health care is the way to go right now.

I am not worried about loosing my job at all. It's gone. So I focus on things that I am licensed to do!

I have been very worried one of the last survivors from the Internet bubble. If the company does not go backrupt maybe I will survive even longer. If the company does file or file for protection severance is gone for all and it will be like CitiBank impacting thousands.

Here in the Triangle which if I am not mistaken the highest per capita PhD population you are competing with MBAs and PhDs for jobs which are at a fraction of the salaries many are use to. While its great to be in a high tech growth area, right now its one of the worst places to be if you are unemployed.

Someone else already mentioned it in an earlier post. If you think we(NC) is not that bad on unemployment wait until the payments stop and it will be around 15-20% easily.

Of course....we're all on the bubble. Scary times.

I can hardly wait for the unemployment percentage to hit double-digits.

"you are competing with MBAs"

It's not hard to compete with an MBA.

Not worried. There's always something. The difficulty would be lifestyle changes.

Timbo wrote "It's not hard to compete with an MBA. "

I am not worried but I have had open positions and unless you are hiring you would not believe the competition. If you are not worried I am truly happy for you but you would not believe the resume list and qualifications.

"I am not worried but I have had open positions and unless you are hiring you would not believe the competition. "

Well, I wish you good luck. Job hunting is not a fun thing, especially when you have a lot of people with your skills also in the market.

There was an article on CNN that mentioned areas that had jobs available. Mostly places in Montana and Utah.

A friend of mine has been looking for a job for over 5 months now. She thought she had finally found a job but at the last minute they wouldn't hire her because they checked her credit and she had a repo from 6 years ago. What does a repo have to do with the kind of work you can do?

"are you worried about losing your job?"

Nope--I didn't have one (been at home with the kids) and my husband already lost his. No worry there...

The REAL worry is finding a new job...

My husband's unemployment will run out in March. I'm thankful for unemployment but at the same time, $419 a week doesn't pay the bills and our credit cards are about maxed out. I've been applying for jobs since my son started Kindergarten in September. I've not even had an interview. Or phone call. I just got done checking the ESC and there's not much out there. At all. We are selling whatever we can on eBay to pay for some Christmas presents for the kids. My mom sent me a check via Priority Mail today in the hopes that it gets here by Black Friday and the sales. She wants to make sure the kids have presents from Santa.

My mom said today she is flying in 12-11, I'm not sure if my dad is coming or not, but I REALLLLY look forward to seeing my mom. I need my mom right now.

exwife1956 - Employers can afford to be very picky right now. Possibly to this employer a person having a repo shows a lack of personal responsibility. Unfortunately, employers have to be extraordinarily careful about the questions they ask for fear of lawsuits. So they would likely not bother to ask "why" the repo. It is safer to just have a hiring policy for all candidates that mandates a potential new hire must have a sparkling clean credit record.

Golo editor can we get a new blog up here. I'm tired of looking at this one.

poeple aren't losing their jobs at the rate the news is saying!

Is Obama still going to be president?

Yea I'm worried.

"PLEASE TELL ME WHERE!!!I HAVE A MBA,AND MAKING 8.00/HOUR!!! [...] Because it was not a school like nc state or others no one cares.it was the university of phoenix."

I'm sorry to break the news to you, but a U of P degree isn't gonna get you very far, and it's not because it's an out-of-state school; it's because U of P has a VERY poor reputation and is basically considered a diploma mill with subpar teaching standards and less class hours than more highly regarded schools. You would have been better off by attending an AACSB accredited school like Elon, NC State or ECU, all of them having reasonably priced programs.

PHDs and MBAs are pretty much a dime a dozen. Too many people have them and it devalues the degree. Being involved in the hiring process, I will say I personally do not put much credit to a PHD or MBA. For me, it is just another ticky mark and has little weight to the hire or not hire decision.

I have always had a backup plan... I decided 10 years ago to go and get my CDL's. I have never had any intentions of driving a truck- but if I have to- I am ready... with so many openings for drivers, my family will not starve. We might have to change our life style- but could still make it.

That's why I joined MonaVie. It's not a perfect business, but what is? Home based businesses are the wave of the future for the avg indivdual who does have alot of working capital. Regardless of what the future holds, no job is safe...well, almost.

"PHDs and MBAs are pretty much a dime a dozen. ... I personally do not put much credit to a PHD or MBA. For me, it is just another ticky mark and has little weight to the hire or not hire decision."

Maybe you are right about an MBA, but not so right about a Ph.D. Usually people that say things like that don't have advanced degrees.

"PHDs and MBAs are pretty much a dime a dozen. Too many people have them and it devalues the degree."

There's a big difference between an MBA degree from an AACSB accredited school and an MBA from diploma mills like UofP and CTU. MBA degrees from second-tier (not AACSB accredited) schools like Campbell or Meredith may be helpful in getting a job locally, but outside of this area, it's not worth that much. An MBA from an AACSB accredited school like Duke, UNC, ECU, NC State or Elon is recognized world-wide. I wonder why people in NC spend money on UofP or CTU when you can get a high-class online MBA degree for less at ECU.

Good hiring managers know the difference between MBA programs and someone once told me that putting an UofP MBA degree on your resume was not recommended since paying for a degree from there showed that you didn't bother to do proper research before enrolling, and an employer doesn't want to hire that kind of person.

e94de - regardless of the schools Masters and PHDs are commonplace now and as such they do not command the same value as many mistakenly think. An Ivy league school still makes a difference, but for the most part all it will get you is possibly a shot an an interview. I have been through many thousands of resumes over the years, and as I said, the degree is just a ticky mark and nothing more.

timbo - I am involved in the hiring process where I work. Except for very specialized fields, the Advanced Degrees do not count for much. You have to remember, if one of the qualifiers for a position is that the candidate must have a PHD, then everyone considered for that position will have a PHD. It is no different than if a position requires x number of years experience. A significant number of people these days have more than one masters, and a significant number hold Doctorates. It is like anything, the more that there are available, the less difference that it makes.

I speak only spanish and am here illegally. I had no problem getting a job, plus I get free medical care and my 7th baby will be an american citizen as soon as he's born in a few days. I drive a brand new car, a neat little credit card that I can use at Walmart that was free and now - a president thats going to take care of me!!!

No job is secure. The oath of fealty between employee and employer has been dead for years as companies are more interested in paying corporate officers ridiculous total comp packages and avoiding shareholder lawsuits.

Workers are now expendable. If they don't like their job, they can quit and the job will go overseas, where is will be done shoddily for a good price.

We can blame Bill Gates for this mess. He set the standard for lining his pockets while hiring temporaries to do the heavy lifting. Donations to worthy third world causes are not enough to buy back his soul. Most CEOs now want the same deal - they get all the money.

Henry Ford had his faults, but he paid a fair enough wage so that workers could buy the very product that they sold.

Unfortunately I lost my job BUT - here is the thing:

If you want a secure job - you have to work for yourself - learn to market to masses, and you have to treat people right.

I won't buy another IBM or HP system because their machines were pooh. But here is the thing. If their support people in other countries weren't clueless and had marketing backgrounds, they probably could have saved them the money.

But that is beside the fact. If you want a job that is safe, then you should invest in jobs that you change every 5 years. If you are an incompetent dolt, then you deserve the welfare line.

I on the other hand, have a license to peddle others goods when I am asked to do so. So I can beg a corporation to hire me or I can go my own way.

I have a UoP degree, and I can tell you that it was a kick in the pants compared to the class at NCSU.

"I wonder why people in NC spend money on UofP or CTU when you can get a high-class online MBA degree for less at ECU."

Because when you step out of the area, an ECU degree is worth as much as a University of Texas at Abeline degree has.

The fact of the matter is that a UNC-W degree means nothing past I-95.

A community college degree is your starter toilet paper.

"the community college is your starter toilet paper"

i do resent this remark. i happen to train people at the community college level who are laid off or just first time students, and they go into the workplace making almost 2 to 3 times as much in a different field where just a high school diploma would be enough... all because they have a community college education, whether it be just a certificate or diploma. I think it has more to do with what field you are going into, as to how much your degree is worth. I do think some people waste too much money on higher education, when they could go to a community college for what they end up doing.

Dear College Kids arguing degrees.. The company I just got laid off from has about a good 30 percent foreign workers, on site, with work visas, are highly educated in their countries, work for way less and have about as much loyalty to the country and the company they work for as the company has for them. This is the outsourceing they don't have on the news to much ....wonder why.

Oh yeah, i forgot this is a high tech company, people with andvanced comptuer degrees, software engineers, programmers fill these positions.

I think some employers (especially those federally funded organization, meaning our free tax money) should be brought to justice and be condemned for adding more employees out of work. I am speaking by own experience from the last organization I worked for. I was discriminated based on my national origin, which I reported to the HR, the Board members, and now before the EEOC by the CFO, followed with allegations of poor performance that has not been investigated through-foully. I lost my job like that, and I am innocent from all allegations but nothing has been done from ECMHSP. The worse scenario is that I was forced to work like a slave with an ongoing worker's compensation case and I was told they will not pay for my treatment. I need to know how, where to get justice because I know this country is a country of laws. Guess what, they cooked the book? I would like for the fed to look at our $$$ closely, paid raise, etc.. I am still seeking for justice, bk I loved and performed my job

I'm worried. I have a mom that has dementia, heart problems and lives an hour away. My brother has accepted or is going to accept a job that is going to carry him to the coast ( wilmington) to work. Everything is going to fall on me. She is very stubborn. She says she is going to come stay with me but I don't know. I will have to continue to take off and go when something comes up.

Nows the time everyone should volunteer. Yeah, see what your made of. When things are tough, will you still help your fellow human being. Lets see what your made of.

Oh yeah, btw, I new things were bad a while back when a mental retarded guy got a high school diploma(in the 80's), who couldnt read or write. Made my diploma mean so much, uhhhh!

"i do resent this remark. i happen to train people at the community college level who are laid off or just first time students, and they go into the workplace making almost 2 to 3 times as much in a different field where just a high school diploma would be enough."

Good - then you understand that most of your employers are looking for a masters degree to fulfill menial jobs, and that those who have Associates Degrees are your Wal-Mart Super Center Employees.

I have two Associates in Engineering and know better than your resentment.

This is a scary time for people like me whose wife is at home watching our baby girl because to find a job that pays enough for daycare, gas and bills is hard to find. I having been the working parent/spouse for a while now and it scares me that I will be sent home early from being laid off or hours cut even worse than what they already have now.

No I'm not afraid of losing my job. I lost it almost a year ago.............

"poeple aren't losing their jobs at the rate the news is saying!"

Uh, yes they are. You may not have personally been affected or even known someone affected but that doesn't make it any less of a fact. Stay in your bubble, it's too scary out here for you.

Getting a good job is all about experience and resume building. The academic credentials might help get you in the door but specialized industry specific certifications help a lot more. Project Management Professionals (PMP) and those with specific technology certifications and two years of on the job training/experience are having the most success in the market.

Those who shun technology won't stand a chance over the next decade regardless of their ambitions in medicine, accounting, marketing - name it. Soon being computer illiterate will be like not being able to read. You'd be surprised how many MBA's I've met who can't find a file on a network. Hell some can't even log in to the network.

anyone who thinks the news is exaggerating must be a bush supporter.

I lost my job 3 weeks ago, my dad lost his job this week, my girlfriend has been unemployed since november. my parents are selling the house in order to survive and eating small meals, I'm stocked up on oodles of noodles and now late on all my bills. This is a serious depression that is continually trickeling down and getting people who thought they would never be affected.

Thank you George Bush and all your "smart" supporters!

Its terrible. I have not been laid off from my job but know people who have been. I don't have a lot but I try to lend a helping hand to anyone God blesses me to be able to help because I know it could be me. If those with more than enough would reach down to help someone less fortunate what a world this would be.

Thank you George Bush and all your "smart" supporters! danimal2179

He was the problem to this economy.

I just lost my job after 27 years with the company. I do not know what to do how to apply for a job anything about unemployment. Ive always worked. Im worried and scared and single so I have no spouse to fall back on. I do have my daughter and grandson so Im not alone just scared.
