are you worried about losing your job?

Published Nov 21, 2008

Hello GOLO:

I am becoming increasingly disheartened by the sheer number of people losing their jobs. Every blog I see about it posted here breaks my heart and the news continues. I just learned of more massive layoffs at my old employer, and given that I'm from Detroit, I know many many people who have been affected by the auto industry woes.

So what practical advice can we offer people who are finding themselves back in the job market?  If you're in that position, what steps are you taking to find employment?

What if you haven't been in the job market for 20 years? Then what?

Are you worried about losing your job?

Let's use this space to talk about everything from starting your own business to networking to the importance of saving for a rainy day.

We're bound to offer up something helpful to others.

050: I just told my friend who was going to apply to one of those schools for a PhD not to do it, because some employers feel you virtually paid for the piece of paper. I am so sorry!

funny how last years superbowl was played at that stadium, huh?

05: Another thing... 8 bucks an hour to manage a warehouse? Again, dude you're way underpaid. :(

no i work in retail before making 60,000

I'm not worried. If I were to get let go, there's my severance and once that's all used up, Obama will be in office and he'll take care of my mortgage and fuel costs.

My brother got laid off this week, and I am still employed but am going to receive a pay cut starting December 1.

05: I agree with IDC.

I'd start looking in other cities/states if I couldn't find a better job with an MBA.

I have a friend who got an MBA through University of Phoenix online, and she got a job using it. Granted, she lives in Minneapolis, but still. You can do it!

Had 4 offers but fell through,no relocation costs are paid.I'M waiting for january.Want to work in iraq, but have to wait for a passport now

I think everyone should be afraid of losing their jobs. NO ONE is safe.

05: Best wishes to you. I tell you, working in Iraq would be a bit scary in the current climate. I admire your determination. You'll pull through this!

050462 I had a friend who was a veteran that did the same thing. He worked for a company that sent him to Kuwait. He made some very good money. Hard job though. He worked 6 - 12's a week.

Been down before, this is nothing new

Worked for a trucking company for 15 years, had 117,000 in 401k,all gone, company went bankrupt. anybody remember movie maxium overdrive i think that was filmed in wilmington years ago?

True dat, Packy.

I'm going to reserve the worry if such a thing becomes my reality, but I sure see the reality of the market itself. It ain't pretty.

05: Best wishes to you. I tell you, working in Iraq would be a bit scary in the current climate. I admire your determination. You'll pull through this!

thanks,if i had kids,i would not but since i do not don"t care

05 yep I remember MO. Great movie.

Angela, I am so fortunate that I have a govt. job and have been with them for 30 yrs. I feel so bad for so many out here who are struggling to make house payments, raise children, and then lose their job on top of it. It is a terrible thing. I have my belief's on several reasons our economy is in such shambles, but that is not revelant to this blog. I wish all of you out there who are in dire straights, that life will deal you a winning hand, and things will turn around for you.

I've been worried about my job for some time now as I'm a single parent, but I seriously don't think anyone is safe other than healthcare workers. I'm not even sure a job at Wal-Mart is safe these days.

does anybody remember that movie?i was in it!!!

That may have been before my time. When did the movie come out?

fraid not!

If i did not have any faith i would not be here today, thanks everyone, and tomorrow is a new day.

mid 1980s i think the one about the machines taking over

Some of you might remember that I posted my resume here in hopes of drumming up some interest. It didn't work, but it was worth a try.

I'm going to apply for that new posting on the WRAL site for a "GOLO MANAGING EDITOR". . . . . . Just Kidding, Don't block me! (I hope Santa doesn't read this).

I do 05. Emilio Estevez starred. Machines took over the world when a crazy comit came through or something like that. Don't tell me you are EE. ;)

05 yep I remember MO. Great movie.

besides a part, helped negotiate the advertisement for our company to be in the movie as well.

050462, Did you get killed by the lawn mower, the baseball field mower, the head set, the blender? Where you one of the 7 people in the diner/gas station trying to fend off the Jeep with a fully automatic 50 caliber, the jester rig, and various other vehicles until the army blew the controlling satellite out of the sky.

no

was one of those that was lying in the street already dead

050462, So, you were one of the various citizens running for your life when all the machines go bezerk. I remember now, the baseball field was a steam roller and the kid got his head popped like a watermelon. Apparently Mr. King also put in some sort of rated "R" machines that killed their female owners too, if catch my drift.

So, more of a prop instead of a part.

People / Companies are getting ready for the new year and planning NOW how to cut people. They are not waiting until Obama takes office. It is only going to get worse. Fasten your seatbelts people, it is going to be a rocky road ahead.

Some of you might remember that I posted my resume here in hopes of drumming up some interest. It didn't work, but it was worth a try.

i went to raleigh a few weeks back, stopped at a intersection with a 3 piece suit on advt.MBA LOOKING FOR A JOB!!! 0 RESULTS 3 women wanted my phone number though, lol

So, more of a prop instead of a part.

1st part was me and everyone else running for your life!

anybody in bull durham?i was in the stands that day as well.

My pay sucks but business is always good.

Do not take nothing for granted,What is here today, might be gone tomorrow.Good luck everyone, and god bless!!

"My pay sucks but business is always good." --- people just dying to give you work?

My pay sucks but business is always good.

But people like you will always be my hero!

The DOC will hire anyone who can walk and talk. Pass the drug test and your in. Be prepared to be mamma, daddy, nurse maid, chaplain, doctor, psychologist, psychiatrist, best freind and worst enemy of some of God's forgotten children. The worst of the worst. Locked up and thrown away for you to deal with. Starts at around $29000.

I'm not worried about losing my job, and I'm a contractor out on Ft Bragg, however, I do worry about the people I work with. Most are retired military, but they didnt plan ahead and our contract is good until 28 January 09. It is up for renewal.

NEVER HEARD A WORD,BEEN THERE TRIED THAT ALSO.

Start having lots of babies and live off the system- obviously it's pretty good since 85% stay on it for 10 years or more. Time to let- them- take care of us as we have taken care of them for 30 years...

DOC --- there is the other option, be a client instead of an employee. A cot and three squares. You can even work on another degree to be ready when you get out.

in a nutshell. YES...

There are programs available through the community college system to help those who are unemployed and underemployed. The programs include WIA (Workforce Investment Act) that assist with tuition and often transportation. These programs are available through the regular college and through Continuing Education. If you are lacing computer skills, please stop by or call your local community college to enroll in these classes for no fee. We are looking forward to meeting you and helping you gain some of the skills you will need in the workforce. If you lose your job to an overseas market, you can go to school for two years. You will get your unemployment benefits and free tuition and books. They often help with transportation costs as well. please go by your local community college as programs will start at the first of they year. You will meet some wonderful people and learn new skills. I hope to see you soon.

I think there is a freeze on hiring right now.

I'm not freaking out over it, but it could definitely happen. I have seniority over most of the other programmers here, but the "Sr." at the beginning of my job title means that the company would save more $$ by getting rid of me first. We operate on contracts though, and have quite a few that are good through 2012.

There is a freeze on hire and promotions now but hey, get your name in the hat. The inmates run the prison now so all you have to do is stand around and look important. Females with low self esteme need not apply as you will not make it a hot six months.

Not worried at all, since I was already laid off on the day after the election. Guess my company didn't care for the results, eh?

I've been pleased to find positions available that I'm interested in, but things are SO slow out there right now. Most of the places I've applied to in the last two weeks haven't even looked at resumes yet. I'm also getting the dreaded "you're overqualified" reply from some.

As a teacher my job is pretty secure. When teachers are laid off, they usually start with those with the least experience, and I have been in my county for over 15 years. Could it happen? Yes -- so I won't act as if it couldn't ever happen.

Laid off 9/30. Four week's severance pay.

Admin/Office Manager with over 40 year's experience.

Have put in 93 applications with no job in sight.

No idea how I will stay in my mobile home or keep my 5 year old car.

But believe God has a plan.

God bless.

Rev. RB

State hiring freeze doesn't apply to DOC. But think hard, it isn't at all what you may imagine. I been there done that, got the carp and urine, and spit soaked t-shirt to prove it.
