are you worried about losing your job?

Published Nov 21, 2008

Hello GOLO:

I am becoming increasingly disheartened by the sheer number of people losing their jobs. Every blog I see about it posted here breaks my heart and the news continues. I just learned of more massive layoffs at my old employer, and given that I'm from Detroit, I know many many people who have been affected by the auto industry woes.

So what practical advice can we offer people who are finding themselves back in the job market?  If you're in that position, what steps are you taking to find employment?

What if you haven't been in the job market for 20 years? Then what?

Are you worried about losing your job?

Let's use this space to talk about everything from starting your own business to networking to the importance of saving for a rainy day.

We're bound to offer up something helpful to others.

My job is going to be cut. Likely my replacement will be employed in another country. I do not plan on seeking other employment. However, if I were I would look for a position in the Health Care industry. That is going to be a growing field and it is important to remember that this industry has many many different types of jobs. Not that I can list all the fields, but in addition to medical staff, you need administrators, IT personnel, facilities staff and on and on. Then there are all the businesses that supply the health care industry. At least it is likely to be a fertile place to look.

No worries YR3..I heard that Ringling-Bros. is always looking for a few good men... :P

My dream job is to be the CEO of a failing business and fly to Washington to beg for billions of dollars.

Really TAM? How do you like working there?

I'm not worried about losing my job because worrying about it isn't going to help anything. It does cross my mind every once in a while. I've always been a firm believer in learning a trade as in blue collar. If you learn a trade or two, you'll never have trouble finding work. I have my side business and I only use that to pay for my racin fix. It never hurts to have several options as we never know what tomorrow will bring.........

GRUMPY: Don't say that too loud, some people might start calling you a welfare recipient. You know how these GOLOers are...

Grumpy: I bet thare are lots of people who have never heard of the WIA you mentioned.

My pt job started laying off their full-time people as of Monday of this week. I am a little concerned about that.

Grumpy-Not, I used WIA when I was laid off in 2002. They paid two years books and tuition at Wake Tech, but they didn't pay unemployment the whole time, just 9 months worth. Or 12, can't remember. I've been laid off again, but I don't want to go back to school! I'm doing my work search, but don't expect much to happen until January.

WHATELSE: Don't forget about, "in my private jet".

That's right...I am the cute little lady on the flying trapeze...

Smalldogs you can find out more at the Employment Security commision. Try this site http://www.ncesc.com/individual/training/trainingmain.asp

That may have some info. I just went to an orientation in Lee County this week. I have a lot of information that I still need to go through.

I am applying for a job right now TAM. I will be the guy on the other side who has to catch you. LOL!!!!!!

SPLAT!!!

the real unemployment figure is more like myself whose benefits have run out.Wake up nc,its not 7%more like 18%

The program Grumpy is talking about will also help with job placement once you've graduated.

Idon'tcare they may call me that but I don't care. ;) I worked for 19 years at the same company. My employer paid unemployment insurance for me while I was there. I am just using what was put in there for me.

LOL@TAM

GRUMPY: Preach! You are the prime example of a person who should get that assistance.

One thing I did find out at orientation is that if you are marketable they will help you find a job before they will help you go to school. Their main focus is to get you to working as soon as possible. WHich is what I would rather do.

Grumpy, you take what you can to support your family. It's not welfare if you are actively going to school to better yourself with the idea of getting a job. I don't know of anyone with any sense that would knock someone for doing that.

Thanks IDC

Weyth(sp) in Sanford laid off a 124 people this week. I don't think Caterpillar is hitting on much either? I'm seeing a LOT of suit and tie jobs being done away with........

esc told me only applies to jobs overseas

where r the jobs at???

worst thanksgiving, and christmas ever, wish it was january!!!!!

Mom I will. I have 2 little boys that are looking at their Mama to take care of them and part of that is showing them that no matter what the world throws at ya, you get the glove out, catch it and throw it back the best that you can.

That's an interesting progrm.

Hey IDC! How's it going?

A hand up is not the same as a hand out!

A hand up is an investment. A hand out is a waste.

I was until Tuesday! Now I'm worried about not finding another one...Tough times for lots of folks

BUILDER: Good, well not "good" but it's better! 9 times out of 10, the suits have degrees and can found other employment. I'm more concerned about our trade workers.

BUCKEYE: Hiiii!

050462 You may need to talk to someone. There is also the TAA. Training Assistance Act. It is a federal program that pays for the schooling assistance as well. My ex-employer has filed for these benefits but it has not been approved yet. I hope it does because the benefits with the federal program are even better. They pay 65% of insurance costs.

I'm not too worried about hubby losing his job, always criminals that need watching. It could happen but not as much as with other jobs.

My job is another story. It fluctuates anyway. I'm halfway finished with my degree so that I can find work elsewhere, if I need to. I know parents will always need childcare but it's not a stable income by any means.

I have a degree and I wouldn't want to be out looking for a job now. I'm in banking. I have a friend who was part of the 53,000 who Citigroup just laid off.

BUILDER: Good, well not "good" but it's better! 9 times out of 10, the suits have degrees and can found other employment. I'm more concerned about our trade workers.

PLEASE TELL ME WHERE!!!I HAVE A MBA,AND MAKING 8.00/HOUR!!!

050462, what field are you currently in?

This time last year I was looking for a job. I did everything I could to find work. It took almost six weeks.

Everyday, I looked through websites like Monster, HotJobs and the ESC job bank. I also checked the career pages of the companies that I hoped to work for daily for new postings. The jobs are out there. Unfortunately, they are more people competing for those jobs.

Thanks i will look into that, and its a catch 22 when u still have to pay a mortgage, and basic suppies.

050462? 8 bucks an hour with an MBA?

You have my condolences.

I was worried last year. This year I'm not worried. I refuse to worry. Like YR said, I have skills, I have a good resume. I'll find something else.

I mean, worrying isn't gonna magically make my job stay around if the company decides to cut it, yanno?

050: OMG! Are you serious? Why aren't you using your degree, are you a new grad with no experience?

I'm worried about my son and or his wife loosing hers. He is in building computers and she's in day care field. If jobs go and day cares aren't needing as many workers she's vulnerable as well.

The prison system is dependent on tax money to survive. I have seen the Federal budget figures published on the internet and they don't look good for the prison system. And with all these cut backs I am getting worried they might force me in to early parole. I don't want to be out in that job market competing with all these great bloggers for the same dwindling jobs. I have also heard that cable and broadband are not free out there.

I work in logistics. Was a warehouse manager, and went to school on line,to get both degrees.Because it was not a school like nc state or others no one cares.it was the university of phoenix. As for the other comments,i spend 8-12 hours everday looking for jobs.Have been told too old, overqualiflied.Heard it all

If you are having difficulty finding a job in NC to utilize your MBA, you really need to consider looking in another state!

050: I just told my friend who was going to apply to one of those schools for a PhD not to do it, because some employers feel you virtually paid for the piece of paper. I am so sorry!

050462? 8 bucks an hour with an MBA?

You have my condolences.

and i am also a veteran which does not matter either, but at least i am trying.

05: I agree with IDC.

I'd start looking in other cities/states if I couldn't find a better job with an MBA.

I have a friend who got an MBA through University of Phoenix online, and she got a job using it. Granted, she lives in Minneapolis, but still. You can do it!

050426; I know what you mean about too old. Most of my peers in the dept where I work are their mid to late 20's. Plus I went to a less that prestigious school as well.

I thought Pheonix U. had a job placement program. I could be wrong.

It's tough, I know. Good luck!

05: Another thing... 8 bucks an hour to manage a warehouse? Again, dude you're way underpaid. :(
