Hello GOLO:

I am becoming increasingly disheartened by the sheer number of people losing their jobs. Every blog I see about it posted here breaks my heart and the news continues. I just learned of more massive layoffs at my old employer, and given that I'm from Detroit, I know many many people who have been affected by the auto industry woes.

So what practical advice can we offer people who are finding themselves back in the job market? If you're in that position, what steps are you taking to find employment?

What if you haven't been in the job market for 20 years? Then what?

Are you worried about losing your job?

Let's use this space to talk about everything from starting your own business to networking to the importance of saving for a rainy day.

We're bound to offer up something helpful to others.

I am worried about my job dearly. I work for a GM auto dealer. I have recently begun to review what other skills I have that are marketable and begun my search now. If the economic situation weren't so dire (I am negotiating with my mortgage company to keep from losing my home) I would even consider working a part time job and returning to school so as to find work in the fields where there are openings.

I'm a little worried because the State is in a crisis right now. They have already "dissolved" the position below me so in essence I'm doing two people's job. With that being said, they can't let me go as well because someone has to do it! I am concerned about some of my friends though because they only have HS diplomas and can easily be replaced. I would get good unemployment but not nearly as much as I would make if employed.

I'm not worried about losing my job. That isn't to say that it isn't possible. I made sure that my resume is up-to-date just in case.

I make it a point to keep in touch with former co-workers. I don't want the next time I reach out to someone to be when I need a hand.

They can lay me off for all I care. I'll take the severence and enjoy a nice vacation.

I have skills and experience. I am not worried in the least.

I have already lost my job. Right now I am checking into the WIA. The workforce investment act. If you are approved the government will send you to college for up to 2 years all expenses paid and you will also receive unemployent pay for the 2 years that you are in there. If a need is demonstrated they will also pay for travel expenses, tools that would be needed for your new trade, uniforms if needed and child care.

I am an acccounting specialist for a small business in the home improvement industry. We have let 7 people go within the last couple of months and cut hours. Right now, Im much needed even though things are slow, Im just scared that if things dont pick up soon we will be out of business.

Caterpillar in Clayton is shutting down 2nd and 3rd shift and laying off all temps on Dec. 18th. All staff employees from 2nd and 3rd will move to 1st shift. Very sad. My sis works there, but she is staff and 60% are temps. Strange ratio of staff vs. temps, huh?

I feel my job is secure because of what we sale and ship overseas...Sorry I can't say, but most of us do this! High demand for it! I am secure for now.

Strange ratio of staff vs. temps, huh? 39 going on 26 ..working

The have a ratio like that so they don't have to pay benefits ar severence when things like this happen.
