can school officials accurately assign students three years ahead?
Published Nov 14, 2008Views: 526
Wake County School officials are trying something new.
Instead of forecasting student assignments year-to-year, a practice that makes some parents walk on eggshells of uncertainty, they are considering forecasting for the next THREE years.
They say it's more cost-effective. Other reasons are listed in the WRAL.com story: Wake schools to release assignment plan Saturday.
Do you think this is a good thing? And based on the history of reassignment in Wake County, can they make this work?

Please take this the right way as I am not trying to pick on you but unless you have a "My other job is a mind reader" bumper sticker on your car where "(you) choose to live" has nothing to do with it. That's just the point for a number of families.
They say nothing in life is a certainty. Well that should also apply to WCPSS School Reassignment. There is absolutely no reason at all that every one, to two, to three years where your kids go to school should be a mystery.

The movement of this many children to schools so far from their homes, will increase the cost in public transportation for the county. Fuel and maintenance expenses would increase for Wake county buses. There would be a need for more buses to accommodate the routes that are currently built into existing bus routes with shorter route times. With the existing finances for WCPSS, we cannot understand how the movement of students to schools that are over 15 miles away, would be the best financial and economic decision.

The time commitment that is required to belong to activities such as sports, band, chorus and drama and also parental support with volunteering and PTA is not feasible at a school that is 40 minutes away. School's will ultimately suffer the consequences.
