can school officials accurately assign students three years ahead?

Wake County School officials are trying something new.
Instead of forecasting student assignments year-to-year, a practice that makes some parents walk on eggshells of uncertainty, they are considering forecasting for the next THREE years.
They say it's more cost-effective. Other reasons are listed in the WRAL.com story: Wake schools to release assignment plan Saturday.
Do you think this is a good thing? And based on the history of reassignment in Wake County, can they make this work?

I like the idea because families deserve some stability, I just don't have much faith in it working.

The main benefit to this is that the annual reassignment misery is removed and there is an end to the one year solutions where kids get moved too often. Furthermore, and perhaps not of immediate value, planning will now have to take into account feeder patterns. A lot of what we see today in Wake County in reassignments for middle schools is a result of poor management of feeder patterns. Elementary schools grow and send more kids to the middle schools than they can handle. A three year plan will have to take this into account.
There is a lot still to work on, but this is a step in the right direction.

It would be nice if the schools gave the children a sense of stability in their lives.... hmmmm maybe it would lead to kids feeling a sense of ownership, loyalty, pride, etc.... those seem like admirable qualities to try and instill in our children.
As it is, it's hard to care a whole lot about the school they attend this year because they might be going somewhere else next year.

I had already gotten comfortable with the idea of year round, now he'll be traditional. I guess I could apply to the original school.

Simple : area going to school, type and quantity of housing in area, available area for new housing, type and quantity of new housing, current enrollment of school, current birth average in area of school, past three year trend of new families.
If only there were some sort of tool made by a local company that could take these statistics and chart out the possibilities. Mr. Jim Goodnight, please pick up the white courtesy phone.
