There is alot going on with MS research. Unfortunately, there still is no cure for this unpredictable and dehabilitating disease. However, one new finding is that a drug normally used to treat leukemia may help to slow or possibly reverse some of the effects of Multiple Sclerosis. The name of the drug is Alemtuzumab, sold in the US as Campath. The jury is still out on this treatment, but in the future it has the possibility of helping alot of people. Check out the link to the recently published story on wral.com:

It is not an a treatment widely available/approved for MS yet due to the noted sometimes severe side effects. However, if this treatment is given enough time to be thoroughly tested even past normal clinical trials, perhaps this can be a viable alternative to many of us with Multiple Sclerosis. It did not clarify, but the gentleman mentioned in the story must have given special permission/agreed to be part of a clinical trial or something because it says he is already using this med.
In other news, planning for the 2009 MS Walk is already underway! In the Raleigh area, it will be held April 25. The Fayetteville area will hold their walk on May 2.
Research for a cure such as mentioned in the news story are funded in part by the efforts of those raising money for the National Multiple Sclerosis Society. I am blessed to still be able to walk; many of us with MS cannot. So I have either participated in or had a team every year with the exception of one since I was diagnosed. I walk for those who cannot. I enjoy it very much!
I will be posting more info on the walk in the future, and give tidbits of new info as often as I can.
If you have Multiple Sclerosis, have a friend or a family member with MS, or are just interested in learning and supporting those that do, join in the blog conversations or better yet, join the MS Sucks group! We would be glad to have ya! And if you have MS, don't be shy-if you know someone that has MS and they have a computer and internet, tell them about GOLO and the chance they can have to communicate with others with MS.
Thanks for your time and have a TERRIFIC DAY!
