Eventual champion Kansas knocked off North Carolina in the semifinals of last year's NCAA tournament. But the Tar Heels are the big favorite heading into this season.

North Carolina received all 31 first-place votes as the unanimous No. 1 in the preseason ESPN/USA Today coaches' poll, which was released Thursday. After losing a big chunk of its roster, Kansas debuts at No. 23.

Since ESPN began participating in the coaches' poll in 1997-98, the Tar Heels are the first unanimous preseason No. 1.

So we can look back as the season progresses at how wrong some of these choices were (not UNC of course!), here's the full list.

"I'm just looking forward to spoiling your shot at an unbeaten record and getting a chance to eliminate you from the big dance, too. :)"

TBK - if Hansbrough misses much time with the leg injury, State may not get to play UNC early enough to be the first to beat them. But not to worry for the Heels. There's no way State or anyone else is going to keep them out of the big dance this year.

Go Heels! Great season ahead!

Thank you for that relevant contribution...

Q. What's better than watching Carowhiner lose? A. Watching a Carolwhiner cheerleader cry because they lost.

I wish Kansas was on the schedule this year. Oh well, maybe in the tournament. As for NC State, I look for them to be more focused this year and have more success than last year. Time will tell......

I think last year was a fluke in that State wasn't REALLY that bad. But they weren't anywhere near third in the ACC, either, where their preseason pick put them. No way should this team have finished 12th in the ACC, though. That's the only fluke part. I believe they belonged somewhere in the lower half of the ACC, though. Probably this year, too. But no way we finish 12th again, unless they have injuries equivalent to the football team.

You might be right about that. After all, State was ranked at the beginning of last year, and they stayed there for at least a little bit. Then... well... you know what happened. But they showed promise. I think Brandon Costner could be an outstanding player and maybe last year was a fluke. We'll see what happens. I'd rather NC State be in the top tier of the ACC than Boston College or Florida State or VT or something.

"Aw, TBK, that is very polite and sportsmanlike of you. On a bright side for you, the Wolfpack can only get better right?"

Thanks for the backhanded, condescending compliment. But I guess I'll take it! ;)

Yes, we can only go up. I hope.

At the risk of sounding like the typical State fan, I think we'll be better this year. State was doing pretty good when we lost our only decent point guard last year, and had beaten some decent teams. When Degand went down, it was like a football team losing their only good quarterback. Throw in a healthy dose of chemistry problems and the wheels just came off. Hopefully those key issues have been addressed and State can at least be competitive this year.

I think Roy said it best... "That's the great thing about college basketball. Rankings are nice, but we don't have to wait for each Monday's poll to come out to see how we fared. We get to play that out on the court."

Aw, TBK, that is very polite and sportsmanlike of you. On a bright side for you, the Wolfpack can only get better right?

Anybody feeling like the Duke ranking is characteristically overly optimistic? Looks like it could be another fast start for the Devils and an increasingly typical collapse in March. The UNC-Duke games should still be epic again this year though!
