my first trip to the nc fair - lessons in love

Published Oct. 15, 2008

This is a short version of a longer work I posted earlier.

My first visit to the NC State fair was in 1980.

Some friends fixed me up with a girl whom I’d had a crush on for many weeks so my first trip the NC state fair was more about romantic aspirations than rides and exhibits.

In my zeal to impress this lovely young lady, I ignored my general disdain for amusement park rides. That turned out to be a bad decision.

By the second ride (The Enterprise) I was thanking my lucky stars I had an empty stomach from saving room for all the good food I thought I would be eating. For much of the remaining evening I was in a dizzy, queasy, headachy fog.

Late that night I had recovered to an extent and allowed myself to be convinced that if I closed my eyes I could ride the Himalaya without getting sick again. That was my second bad decision of the evening.

My date was a real trooper through the whole thing and she stuck with me dry heaves and all. I really thought I had found the girl of my dreams, and my first girlfriend in North Carolina. However, before the 1980 fair closed for good she was back with her ex beau.

Two lessons about love I learned that night. Take Dramamine if you want to impress a young lady by riding fair rides, and if your date says negative things about her ex, she probably still likes him.

reminds me of Joe Dirt, whe he takes that girl to the fair that he met her at earlier that day

Yeah, been there, done that. Nothing impresses a date more than to see you upchuck.

I was wondering who on earth would try to impress a girl by taking her to the fair, but I see that it happened in 1980 so you were much younger then. It sounds like a teenagers idea of a romantic evening.

Awwww. I have to add my story. I hadn't been dating my boyfriend for very long in 2002 when we went to the state fair but i was head over heels but had no clue how he felt. He got on stage at the Kareoke booth and sang me a song and made me a CD. It was John Michael Montgomery's "I Swear"..I wore it about out listening to it, but six years later and four and a half years of marriage behind us, I still have it!
