copperhead alert

Published Oct. 13, 2008

Can you spot the copperhead in the photo?  He's there...believe me.

Just wanted to remind people to be careful with your pets.  I've been tied up the last 2 days with one of my jack russells, Joker,  that found one in the yard...

I think he's going to be OK, but just keep your eyes open.  The vet said several other dogs were brought in over the weekend with copperhead bites.

We went thru this several years ago when all 3 of my jacks were involved, and Joker almost died...was bleeding, all over, with huge black pockets of blood forming just beneath the skin... (Jack Russells never learn)

So...be careful... The snake is in the lower left squdrant of the photo (not the one that bit my dog...just meant to show how well they hide)

A few years back, a dog of mine about the size of a Jack got bit on the inside of one of her back legs... the damage was much as you describe, with the addition of the skin surrounding the bit sloughing off. Tough old b*tch that she was, she pulled through, and I'm really hoping your Joker does, too.

Many thanks for the excellent post, and good luck!

TMed, good advice. I, too live in on a heavily wooded lot. But, for some reason, none of my three cats has ever had a snake bite. Maybe cats just have some kind of instinct that dogs don't.

Praying that your jack russell comes thru okay!

I never will forget the time my grandfather found two coiled up together mating on the stone back porch steps of their house. I'm guessing those two snakes died happy.

I think when the snakes are young, they can't control the amount of poison they inject when they strike...,

Actually, it's because their venom is highly concentrated because they are young, which is why their bites are often times more severe than an older snake.

best wishes for Joker. This is another good reason to have chickens around. They will tear a snake to pieces.

They're beefing up for the winter hibernation, so they will strike at anything warm blooded. There are always more snake bites this time of year.

excellent blog t. I grew up in the woods and spotted him immediately, but they do blend exceptionally well. I was trained to always look for them since I was T-kid.

I had to have a southern co-worker come show me where that thing was, it IS a "biggin"!!!

snakes are the devil, lol. i'm absolutely TERRIFIED of them. had one hiding under my watermelons i grew, i didnt even go back out to look at the watermelons just let them rot, lol. to scared to go back out there. haha

I can see it clearly. But I'm going to be careful with myself and my kids. The pets are on their own.

last yr i killed 2 baby ones, they were in my flower pots outside and i found them when i was watering. the babies are the worse...hope your dog feels better soon t
