i got the four year blues

If you click on the image, you'll see the electoral college map for today and this day in 2004.

It's quite telling plus it reveals what I see to be the flaw(s) of the electoral college.

Do you think that the electoral college should be put out to pasture?

Do you think that it is fair for a state's winning electoral voter to take all the votes?

Do you think the electoral college unfairly amplifies the winner of the popular vote?

viol8r- why would you have to redo the house? The electoral college was established because people back then did not have access to information about the candidates the way we do today- the gov't thought they wouldn't be well enough informed to make the right decision, and a lot of people didn't have access to vote anyway. Thus they established knowledgeable people to act as electors, based theoretically on popular vote of their state. Nowadays, you'd have to live in a cave not to have access to info about the candidates. Popular vote should be the way to go in a democracy. It is insane to me that the electors have the ability to go AGAINST their state popular vote. They aren't held to any obligation to vote for the winner in their state. And as recently as 2000, a pres. was elected who did not win the popular vote! (and what a great legacy THAT created). DO AWAY with the electoral college. Americans can handle the responsibility these days to elect our own pres.

I'm very much against a popular vote.

The electoral college, while I don't like that the voters could change their vote, serves to keep the various states together, less so than the Senate, which gives disproportional power to smaller states, but both serve to keep us United STATES.

Popular vote would give all the power to the large cities. Wyoming, Montana, Utah, Idaho, N & S Dakota and other far west states, even Maine and Hawaii would be better served to secede and form a union or confederation, or be independent. I know all about the Civil War, but that was then, and this is now, and imagine what might happen if Quebec votes for independence, and if the economy did tank while DC worked only for the population centers?

no, I disagree...I think those who established it were very wise, indeed...

"That's why the electoral college should be done away with and it be Popular Vote. Then no one can complain about who has more or less. Every voice could count equally."

That wasn't even in response to the electoral college vote (although I don't really agree with that either). Onyourheels wants one vote per state.

And with that, I'm really out.

tmedlin-how do you feel about onyourheels plan? Do you think that would be at all fair?

"But seriously, why should a state with a tiny population be every bit as equal to a big one win electing a president? That would bring about a civil war."

That's why the electoral college should be done away with and it be Popular Vote. Then no one can complain about who has more or less. Every voice could count equally.

I agree with Ken D. 100%

onyourheels-Alright. We disagree. I have to assume you are a republican voter because no sane democratic voter would even attempt your argument. If you truly are serious, my last point is put yourself in the opposite position. If the majority of states vote democratic. Despite how you respond to me on here, really think about it. Would that be fair to have a democratic president every election based on your voting method if the majority of the people in the country did not want one? If the majority of people in texas, california, new york, pennsylvania, ohio, and a couple other big states voted republican, but all others voted democrat? How would that be fair?

I've got to go to stuff, so have a good night.

Which makes it worse for those smaller states. When a canidate wins a state...every single person in that state didn't vote for whoever. If 100 people vote for Obama, and 78 people vote for McCain...who cares where the votes come from. Should Rhode Island feel bad because they only got 12 votes? No. Each canidate gets however many votes they get, shouldn't look at things as states...just count the freakin' votes. It's crazy...and just another way for the government to control everything

but people live in the states and are represented by the state.
