if you don't tell, how can anyone know?

Published Oct. 13, 2008

Sandra's post hit the nail right on the head this morning. Too often we don't verbalize what's in our heart and in being reticent about our wants and needs, we forgo the prize  to someone else , someone else  that is more forthcoming about what it is they see as their goal. Mind reading is a parlor trick for the most part, perhaps a scientific breakthrough will create some sort of tinfoil hat which will allow others to peer into our mental cavities and abysses, but until that day comes, we have to rely on communication, actually expressing ourself,  to clearly establish what our thoughts are. Maybe it's for the best. Maybe not. But for now it's what we have to work with. Be open with those you love, with those you work with...most of all be open to yourself, and really pay attention to what you yourself are thinking. Don't let a curtain of darkness descend over you and block out the sunlight of another day of living.

If you could read my mind  /  Gordon Lightfoot

"If you could read my mind love
What a tale my thoughts could tell
Just like an old time movie
'Bout a ghost from a wishin' well
In a castle dark or a fortress strong
With chains upon my feet
You know that ghost is me
And I will never be set free
As long as I'm a ghost that you can't see
If I could read your mind love
What a tale your thoughts could tell
Just like a paperback novel
The kind that drugstores sell
When you reach the part where the heartaches come
The hero would be me
But heroes often fail
And you won't read that book again
Because the ending's just too hard to take

I'd walk away like a movie star
Who gets burned in a three way script
Enter number two
A movie queen to play the scene
Of bringing all the good things out in me
But for now love, let's be real
* I never thought I could ACT this way *
And I've got to say that I just don't get it
I don't know where we went wrong
But the feelin's gone
And I just can't get it back

If you could read my mind love
What a tale my thoughts could tell
Just like an old time movie
'Bout a ghost from a wishin' well
In a castle dark or a fortress strong
With chains upon my feet
But stories always end
And if you read between the lines
You'll know that I'm just tryin' to understand
The feelin's that you lack
I never thought I could feel this way
And I've got to say that I just don't get it
I don't know where we went wrong
But the feelin's gone
And I just can't get it back"

"I have found as I get older that I have no trouble saying exactly what I mean but the problem comes in when others take offense at it, calling it a communication problem. I maintain, then as now, there is NOT a communication problem, rather a perception problem on the part of the listener."

---

I've always loved Gordo but my favourites are "Edmund Fitzgerald" and "Canadian Railroad Trilogy". Guess I'm going to have to cue him up when my run of Harry Chapin is done...

I think you nailed in on the perception thing and I'd add that in my experience, if the other person refuses to recognise the truth or that they might be wrong about what they know...then there really isn't an incentive on my part to continue the conversation.

I have a much better memory of events than I get credit for and it's quite frustrating when the other party is wrong in their recollection.

So the tendency is to just shut down, tune out, and occasionally get angry and fight...none of which is optimal.

really great blog, oldrebel.

I used to be scared to speak up. If I had to tell someone something I knew they wouldn't be happy about, it would totally stress me out, and I would try to get around it. Somewhere down the line, I just started saying what need to be said and found out it was not that big of a deal. If I irritated somebody, guess what, they got over it.

However, for some strange reason, I still hold back to an extent, even here on Golo where nobody knows me personally at all.

I have found as I get older that I have no trouble saying exactly what I mean but the problem comes in when others take offense at it, calling it a communication problem. I maintain, then as now, there is NOT a communication problem, rather a perception problem on the part of the listener. No one ever doubts what I mean but sometimes those w/ thin skins or some self inflated ego like to take it as being ________. Fill in the blanks

Love the poem.

Expressed just right.

Hey now, that looks like my sign! *grins* http://www.wral.com/golo/image/1778915/

Most of us are afraid to say what we truly want because we don't want people to think of us as insensitive, rude, or too pretentious. The fact is, however, that if we were honest to start with, many miscommunications and malcontent would have been avoided.

OR, I had left a comment on my blog in response to what you wrote. Since I wasn't sure you would visit the blog again, I also pasted it on your profile page. :)

once again another terrific blog, reb!
