are you looking at household budget cuts?

Lately, I've been looking at where I can cut back at on my monthly expenses. The price of gasoline has been regularily leaving me short-changed by the end of the week. I have to deposit a certain amount from my paycheck into my checking account every week just to pay bills. What's left has been divided into spending money and savings. But what I was putting into savings in the past is now going into my gas tank. So I am now unable to save any money that's accessible. I still contribute into my 401K, and I say that in hopes it doesn't go bye-bye with the stock market's downfall.

So now, what have I considered doing away with to lower my monthly living expenses? I may very well decide tomorrow to go to Time Warner Cable's office and discontinue my digital cable service and go back to basic cable. That new HDTV I recently bought as a self-given house-warming gift to myself may have to loose it's high definition signal for now, along with some of those channels I never watch. That should save me a mere $25/mo.

Another way I've tried to save money is to turn off the lights in a room when I walk out of it. Last month my electric bill was $44. I also  take short showers and conserve as much water as I can. My water bill last month was only $16. My phone service is limited to one phone...my cell phone. I did away with a landline years ago.  So utilities are well groomed, especially if I reduce my Time Warner bill.

Now where else can I save to offset this vicious economy? Any suggestions? Are you, or have you, made any changes in your spending habits? Please share.

Put a timer on your hot water heater. I only run mine 2 hours a day and have enough hot water all day. I have it set to come on an hour before I get up in the mornings. The hot water heater use about $25 to $40. per month without timers.

I've seriously thought of letting my Internet go. Maybe even the extended cable if necessary. Nothing but reruns anyway and half the shows I don't want. I can't install satellite where I live. Wish i could better station for the money.

Yes we are having chicken soup tonight. NO chicken, we just pour boiling water through one end of the chicken and out the other end and put the chicken back up.

I think the biggest way for me to save money..is to resist the urge not to cook and go out to dinner. If I cook double and freeze..I have something easy to make and then I don't want to go out all of the time. It's like freeze spaghetti sauce, chili, meatloaf, sloppy joes, just whatever you like and it's not so much work when you get home.

Now Now Evil one... You sound like my parents did, only they came from wealthy back grounds.

Nope.

Maysmom, your correct, home cooking always taste better to me. I am not fond of eating out, I'd rather cook it myself, even if I mess it up, and trust me I have done my share of mistakes in the kitchen.

What about food? I very seldom go out to eat. I no longer have my hair colored at the shop. I color it myself. That saves $50 a month. I do not like it as much, but I am like you, it goes into the gas tank. It is really making me angry.

Good idea living alone like I do I've been cutting mine off and only uses it once in day to bath and do dishes and then turn it back off. Saved a lot like that all year. People could use a little clothes hanger for some items and save on that dryer. I hang my big towels over the shower curtain and they are almost dry next day and then I finish dry them to make them softer. But again I live alone and have th space.

Panther, is it hard to put a timer on the water heater? How much does one cost?
