elizabeth dole calls her constituents “vile”
Published Oct 10, 2008Views: 332
Senator Elizabeth Dole has launched an sustained attack against some of her constituents as part of her campaign for re-election. In a press release to her supporters and a mass mailing that’s been going out to voters, Dole attacks her Democratic opponent, Kay Hagan, by pointing out that she attended a fundraiser held by a couple of atheists, whom she describes as “vile.” Here’s what the mailer says:
FRONT PAGE: Image of torn photo of children saying the Pledge of Allegiance. "Godless Americans PAC wants to remove 'Under God' from the Pledge of Allegiance. And now, they want Kay Hagan in the U.S. Senate ..."
INSIDE PAGES: Pictures of Hagan and supporters of the Godless Americans PAC. "Liberal Kay Hagan flew to Boston to pocket campaign cash from leaders of the Godless Americans PAC. What is Godless Americans PAC? Godless Americans Political Action Committee is a left-wing organization based in Washington, D.C., dedicated to 'Mobilizing America's nonbelievers for political activism.' They actively support political candidates who are Atheists and who also support their liberal agenda to remove 'under God' from the Pledge of Allegiance and force the Boy Scouts to accept atheists and homosexuals as troop leaders. Their goal is to remove any reference to God in the public arena, including eliminating the Christmas holiday.
"Kay Hagan & the Godless Americans PAC. Liberal Kay Hagan flew to Boston to pocket campaign cash from leaders of the Godless Americans PAC, Wendy Kaminer and Woody Kaplan. They held a private fundraiser for Kay Hagan at their home in Boston, Massachusetts on September 15th. In North Carolina, Kay Hagan says she shares our values. But, behind our backs she's the guest of honor at a fundraiser hosted by the most vile, radical liberals in America."
"We can't trust Kay Hagan to defend our North Carolina values."
BACK PAGE: Image of a torn photo of a mother and young daughter decorating a Christmas tree. "And, Godless Americans PAC wants to eliminate the Christmas holiday. And, they want Kay Hagan in the U.S. Senate."
Vile? As someone on another blog pointed out, can you imagine her calling some religious group (like Jews or Muslims) “vile?” But those who choose science and reason over superstition are described as vile by a sitting U.S. Senator and no one even blinks.
And in the press release, she describes atheists as people “most North Carolinians would not be comfortable having over for dinner.” Again, this is one of my U.S. Senators. I’ve got news for you, Senator Dole–you had dinner with a future atheist in the fall of 2000. How about them godless apples?
Now, some would argue that this bigoted and primitive behavior by Senator Dole means that anyone who believes in being a decent human being and not spewing hatred at your neighbors should vote for Kay Hagan. I disagree. Both Republicans and Democrats have an appalling record when it comes to their treatment of those who don’t believe in the supernatural. Both use the religious, and their susceptibility to manipulation, to advance their own ends. The only party that truly stands for eliminating the irrational hatred of atheists is the party that would end the church-state alliance once and for all - the Libertarian Party. And it just so happens there’s an outstanding Libertarian in this race that the media simply chooses not to mention. Chris Cole is running on the Libertarian ticket against Dole and Hagan, and is now polling around 5-7% (when he’s actually included on the polls).
Cole and the Libertarian Party seek the dismantlement of the state apparatus, which would leave nothing with which to coercively promote religion or suppress atheists. Hagan, on the other hand, has a platform that is a laundry list of expansions of government scope and power. Also, after perusing her web site, she doesn’t seem to have a single press release hitting back at Dole for her anti-atheist vitriol. No, neither Hagan nor the Democratic Party are allies of atheists and the non-religious. Their schemes for promoting government will do nothing but further threaten everyone’s individual liberty and natural rights, believers and non-believers alike.

I think a reasonable translation of that piece of mail is that if you don't agree with Dole's fundamentalist position, than you're at the very least no better than the "vile" atheists and "radical liberals" it also slanders.
So what about those of us who are in the middle who are not rabidly religious nor supportive of "radical liberals" who just got that tract in their mailbox?
When someone gets in my face with their Bible and their fire-and-brimstone holier-than-thou "yer goin' straight to h-e-double hockey sticks" attitude, it tends to provoke a very unfavourable response! If that was their intent, they succeeded beyond their wildest dreams because Dole putting her imprimatur behind that hate-filled piece of mail pretty much guarantees she's far more offensive than Hagan's liberal tendencies.
Want to debate politics? Come at me with what you got. But keep your religion to yourself and I'll keep mine to myself.

Do you believe everything you hear about someone saying someone else said something???
Then you must believe what Kay Hagan said when she said she saved NC's military bases. I was there! She was no where in sight. But Dole was.
God bless.

Not trying to start a partisan war here (as I feel both parties have hopelessly lost their way) but I've gotten plenty of mail from the GOP and their surrogates with the common theme of "if you don't support us/give us lots of money...then you're no better than a filthy stinkin' liberal".
The questionnaires the RNC send every quarter are particularly laughable in that regard. The only alternative to "YES" and a credit card number is "I support liberals and liberal policies".
Too bad they don't allow for a third option...supporting the best solution to a given problem without regard to partisan politics. Sometimes that dovetails with the Democrats, sometimes the GOP.
But that's the problem...the parties cannot exist without the extremists who support and run them even though a likely majority of Americans would truly score moderate/centrist.

AT LEAST SHE DOESN'T ACT AS THOUGH SHE CAN LEAD US AROUND BY THE NOSE AND WE'LL BELIEVE EVERYTHING SHE SAYS. KAY HAGAN CLEARLY DOES BY SPEWING THE NONSENSE ABOUT HER SAVING NC'S MILITARY BASES. HAGAN WAS NO WHERE AROUND WHEN THAT WAS GOING ON. SO SHE SAVED THE MILITARY BASES LIKE GORE INVENTED THE INTERNET...ONLY IN HER OWN MIND, AND THAT'S SCARY.
God bless.

She is just like so many others with promises for "improvement" ...she's had eight years to make "improvement"...to No Avail!
Time to hit the Door Elizabeth!

AMEN, AND AMEN!!!
And that's what all Americans should be - centrists who are registered unaffiliated. Because unless you are, you aren't voting your own mind, you're voting what someone else tells you it should be thinking or believing.
Politics should not be built around cults; they should be built around people with real solutions. Not folks who just add more problems which is what the present political cults do.
God bless.

But between Dole and Hagen. I've done my research. I know what both have contributed in their jobs. Based on that information alone and nothing else?
I'll take Dole over Hagen any day of the week!!!!

Surely you don't think Hagan is better.
She's rich and has no idea what REAL folks go through, and she's dilusional which makes her dangerous.
God bless.

That's exactly what she does. Good luck with that caps-lock.
Neversurrender - I agree. I used to get those letters, even after I unregistered. I kept returning them, writing in large print that Dole was worthless to NC.
They finally got a clue and stopped sending them.

I wouldn't vote for Liddy, anyway - she's too conservative for my liking. And I'm atheist, also. Am I offended?? Nope. If Dole wants to pander to the religious right, that is her right. Do I think she's a fool and condescending towards people of other beliefs?? Yes. So, I'll go and VOTE for Hagan.
End of story.

Fine, then if she had said Catholics are vile. Or Methodists. It doesn't matter. No one would defend her. Why is this different?

I know a few Atheists in the military (my husband is one of them) and they are so deeply "closeted" that they will probably never admit to it until after retirement.

That strategy has at least worked for them...as opposed to the "mavericky" one they're running right now!
And lest anyone be fooled, Senator Burr gave Dole political cover by canceling her "NO" vote on that abortion of a bailout plan. I'm quite certain he was under orders to do so from his masters in the political lobby and RNC once it was apparent the bill was going to pass, objections of the American public notwithstanding.
All to give her cover because she's in an election year and it'll be forgotten by most people by the time Burr has to take his chances at the ballot box.

The caps lock is so my answer can be delineated from yours. It makes reading the blogs easier when one is responding to more than one question at a time.
So you think Hagan has never led her constituents around by the nose?
You probably also think she had a hand in keeping our military bases open then - just like she does. sigh
God bless.

All incumbents need to go. You can vote out the new ones next time. It takes a few cycles, but that's where the voters will control term limits - not wishing congress to get it done.
It's a little painful at first, but once we start regularly flushing the political toilet, the sooner we'll turn over these 'professional' congresscritters and get their attention.
That is, if votes really count at all. One party is not the answer to the other party's ills, either way.

Rev. RB, I'll be honest. I have no idea what thought that particular string of words was intended to convey. Please try again, and I'll try to answer.

Ha! I love it. Pascal's Wager. It was faulty when he came up with it, and it's faulty now. If there is a supreme being, it could just as well be Shiva or Allah or a magical talking pencil or the Tooth Fairy or some floating ball of energy (Star Trek style) who doesn't give a !@#* how you behave or have any plans for you after you die. It makes no sense to create the false dichotomy proposed by Pascal's Wager.

Faith is not about making "sense". That's why it's called faith. Personally, I think it takes as much faith to beleive that some dust got together, blew up, and here we all are. (I can actually disprove this - my first apt didn't blow up and all the dust in NC was in there!) But you are free to beleive, or not, as you want. I am also. Regardless of how lame you think it to be.

True, they can. But there is nothing doctrinal for atheists that says that they are the only ones who are right, unlike many religions.
