alternate heating
Published Oct. 8, 2008Does anyone know of an alternate heating source we could use during the winter? Right now we have a wall heater that runs off of propane. As everyone knows, fuel prices are just way to expensive. We are trying to get out of getting propane this winter. I was thinking about some type of electric heating like a wall unit or something. If anyone knows of anything please let me know. Thanks yall and have a great day :)

The propane actually worked out the best for us, even though gas prices are so expensive. The biggest thing we did though was just to wear clothes. Instead of sitting around in shorts and tshirts, wear jogging pants or a robe around the house.
Our house now has electric heat, but we use the gas logs when it gets cold. They work so well that we don't have to run them very long and as long as we stay dressed warmly, we stay warm long after we cut them off.

Very expensive to use. Don't waste your money.
I'd keep the propane as backup, setting the thermostat to 40-50 or so and purchase a wood stove/insert.
Back in the day, we purchased large logs from across the street of the Raleigh Fairgrounds and had them deliver to our property.
Cut them up and rented a splitter and boom, 6-8 cords of wood, cheap. Not sure you could do that now, but I bet there are places that might sell you logs, if you are so inclined to do the rest of the work.
If you have a pickup truck or a trailer, you can go around and scrounge some wood or buy it from folks in the country for real cheap. Check Craigslist for both wood and a stove. I just did (farm/garden seach for firewood) and there are some interesting prices.
Good luck! Let us know what you end up doing.

If it's money your looking to save, electric baseboards won't do it. Sorry.
