alternate heating

Published Oct. 8, 2008

Does anyone know of an alternate heating source we could use during the winter? Right now we have a wall heater that runs off of propane. As everyone knows, fuel prices are just way to expensive. We are trying to get out of getting propane this winter. I was thinking about some type of electric heating like a wall unit or something. If anyone knows of anything please let me know. Thanks yall and have a great day :)

Electric heaters are energy leeches. We used to live in a house that had no heat or ac- just electric space heaters, a wall propane heater and a window unit.

The propane actually worked out the best for us, even though gas prices are so expensive. The biggest thing we did though was just to wear clothes. Instead of sitting around in shorts and tshirts, wear jogging pants or a robe around the house.

Our house now has electric heat, but we use the gas logs when it gets cold. They work so well that we don't have to run them very long and as long as we stay dressed warmly, we stay warm long after we cut them off.

I will be using a wood fireplace this winter as a supplement to electric heat. Having only 760 sq. ft of space to heat, I think I'll be able to save bigtime...if I can find a deal on some firewood. Craig's list had an ad today for free hardwood firewood. I called the number and have yet to hear back from them. My guess is that it's been taken already.

burning those now worthless stock certificates might provide some level of heat...

"I was thinking about those electric baseboard heaters. Ive actually been looking at them."

Very expensive to use. Don't waste your money.

I'd keep the propane as backup, setting the thermostat to 40-50 or so and purchase a wood stove/insert.

Back in the day, we purchased large logs from across the street of the Raleigh Fairgrounds and had them deliver to our property.

Cut them up and rented a splitter and boom, 6-8 cords of wood, cheap. Not sure you could do that now, but I bet there are places that might sell you logs, if you are so inclined to do the rest of the work.

If you have a pickup truck or a trailer, you can go around and scrounge some wood or buy it from folks in the country for real cheap. Check Craigslist for both wood and a stove. I just did (farm/garden seach for firewood) and there are some interesting prices.

Good luck! Let us know what you end up doing.

When we first bought our house we were disappointed it had gas logs instead than a real fireplace. That winter we changed our mind, though. All we need to do is turn the gas logs on for ten minutes and the whole house is heated up. We love it.

Invite Medlin over to visit. All that hot air could heat up the Superdome, much less your home.

:-D

Fairytail, we had the electric baseboard heaters growing up and they worked very well. Mom got rid of them though in the early 90's cause she got tired of the electric bill running $250-$300 a month just for her.

If it's money your looking to save, electric baseboards won't do it. Sorry.

I was thinking about those electric baseboard heaters. Ive actually been looking at them. Im just unsure how well they would heat up a room.

We have a wood burning stove...we filled our propane tank up over 2 years ago...use that as back-up heat after complaining it costing over $400 to fill. Still sitting at 40%. Plus nice fire...which when we open a door or such do not have to see all those $$$'s go out the door, can cook on it if power goes out and still keep warm.

Radiator heaters are good for room heating and so is electric baseboard heaters. I don't think they should cost so much to run. It didn't when we used them.
