sway me...

Published Oct. 7, 2008

OK, I have to admit the one big thing that scares me about Obama is all this talk about tax increases to support programs that won't benefit me.  Selfish as that may sound, I do not believe in paying higher taxes to benefit those who make a career of mooching off the government.  I think welfare is a wonderful concept, but it's a shame so many people abuse it.

When I say programs that won't benefit me....I mean things like his healthcare plan. I read somewhere that his government provided health care won't be for 'everyone', just kids, and moreso, just kids in families who don't have access to employer-provided insurance, and don't already qualify for current gov't programs such as medicare.

What about the family like mine, that has employer-provided health insurance, but it's so ridiculously expensive it's cheaper to go to BCBSNC and get it ourselves?  My kids still would not qualify...yet my take home pay would be reduced because my taxes will be increased, to pay for this public healthcare that my kids cant make use of, leaving our pay inadequate to even afford the insurance we have now!

It's things like this that make me very nervous.  We aren't 'poor', but we aren't rakin' in the big bucks either.  We make enough money to cover our living expenses which include the mortgage (not an extravigant house, it's 30 years old and modest), food, gas, utilities, etc.  We have no credit debt other than the house, no car pmt, no credit cards.

If our taxes increase drastically, our take home pay will decrease, and we will no longer be able to afford our meager lifestyle. We'd have to sell the house and hope to find a rent in a safe neighborhood suitable to raise two kids for much less than our 'huge' $800/month mortgage.  We'd have to downsize our already humble living arrangements, and still would not benefit from any of these social programs that would put us in this mess in the first place.

So sway me.... why would a family like us want to support a guy who is going to jack up taxes and cause us to lose our way of life?  We pay our bills on time, we didn't buy a house too large, we don't roll around in brand new cars (heck, we only have one car and its paid for!)...we don't deserve to be knocked down, but with the proposed tax increases, we certainly will be.

ill add that i didnt go asking for gov't help before dad died and left me money to get out of debt. instead, i worked two full time jobs while trying to raise my family, just to make ends meet and make those minimum payments i got myself into. like i said, i had to learn from my mistakes, and im sorry, but im not going to smile and hand over my hard earned income to some jackhole who got themselves in the same mess i did. it took a parent dying to bail me out, not money from families in the same boat as me, struggling to make ends meet.

it depends on how they became 'unfortunate'. if its because they were living above their means on credit debt and poor choices, well, i had to learn from my mistakes, and i feel everyone who makes them needs to do the same.

of all the people i know on welfare, not a single one of them is collecting because of a hard luck story, and all of them are taking advantage of the system...something i dont feel America needs to be paying for.

local know it all: well yes, we all miss our loved ones but everyone has to go sometime. you're fortunate he left you something behind. i'm pretty much debt free too except my car pmt, rent and hospital bills, does that mean that those who are not as fortunate as us should go on unhelped? i'll answer that, absolutely not

you can go to the candidates websites and they have a break down of their tax plans and then decide which you believe in. You can find this by keying in google each candidates name and tax issues. ex. Obama issue tax....McCain issue tax

bnice....im living credit debt free because my dad passed away and i took my inheritance money and paid off all my debt. honestly, id prefer to have him living, and a boatload of credit debt. doh :(

One more thing about raising taxes on those earning over $250,000. What folks don't seem to understand is that MANY of those filing returns that show over $250,000 in income are actually sole proprietorships or small corps that need to show that income in order to secure business loans, pay employees, etc, and it's not that those people took home that much actual income. It's damaging to imply that folks over that number on their returns can "afford" the extra tax. I know this first hand as a small business owner. Also, maybe your income taxes won't be affected by Obama's plan, but what about all the other ways we are taxed???? Don't be naive and assume that if you income is untouched, you won't get taxed in other ways.

You need to listen to the small business owner instead of factcheck. org. I hear this from business after business owner...........

Tax votes

The claim: Palin said Sen. Barack Obama voted 94 times to increase taxes.

The facts: Non-partisan FactCheck.org called that count, which has been cited before by Republicans, "inflated and misleading." Examining the 94 votes at issue, FactCheck.org found that 23 were for measures that would have produced no tax increase at all; they were against proposed tax cuts. Seven were in favor of measures that would have lowered taxes for many, while raising them on a relative few, either corporations or affluent individuals, according to FactCheck.org, which is a project of the Annenberg Public Policy Center of the University of Pennsylvania.

The 94 tally includes tw

Tax rate changes

The claim: Palin said Obama's plan to raise the top income tax rate would affect "millions of small businesses." Biden responded that the vast majority of small businesses do not report more than $250,000 in income.

The facts: The liberal Center on Budget and Policy Priorities, citing 2003 data from the non-partisan Tax Policy Center, said in a report that 436,000 tax filers with small-business income — 1.3% of the 32.8 million filers with small-business income — were subject to the top income tax rate. Another Tax Policy Center analysis concluded that "roughly 97% of small businesses would not be affected at all by increases in the top two tax rates."

Len Burman, who runs the Tax Policy Center, said in an interview Thursday: "The vast majority of small businesses would not be affected by the Obama tax increases" because they are not in the top two tax brackets. He added, "Most small business owners have relatively modest incomes."

Troop funding

The claim: Palin said Obama voted against funding U.S. troops in Iraq.

The facts: Palin's charge is true, but FactCheck.org has said the statement paints "an incomplete picture." Obama voted against troop funding once and said at the time that he wanted to fund the troops, but the bill in question didn't include a requirement that President Bush begin bringing troops home. "Obama cast at least 10 votes for war-funding bills," FactCheck.org says

New spending

The claim: Palin said Obama has proposed $1 trillion in new spending.

The facts: Both the non-partisan Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget and the conservative National Taxpayers Union have come up with figures close to that — over four years. The Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget, however, also says Obama has proposed nearly that much in SPENDING CUTS.
