how will you fare...if the economy slides into a depression?
Published Oct. 7, 2008I'm not talking Recession, we've been in that for a while now, I'm talking Depression.
While back home in MN to visit a few months ago, my husband and I were in the basement of my parents house looking for a phone line to plug in the lap-top. My parents don't have a computer--not since my brother moved out and bought his own house.
I came across some notes that my brother had taken from my grandparents (Mom's parents) while he was in college. My Grandpa died two years ago and we just had a close call with my Grandma recently. The notes I read shed a very bright light on what the US may be facing. I wish I had copies of them, and my brother's essay.
My Grandpa grew up on a farm. His parents lost that family farm during the Depression--house and all. They moved in with their neighbors and they ALL worked the fields to provide food. My brother quoted my Grandpa as saying, "No one had much of anything. We had come from Sweden to start a better life and it was gone. Everyone helped out their neighbors in those days. You only kept what you needed and you gave the rest to others, or sold it."
We may be headed in this direction again, but I hope not. There's one thing I know--what I HAVE is paid for. And we do live in a wonderful farming community. I'm not too worried about the coming Depression--but I do worry for others. Those that have so much tend to lose the most.
Unless the government bails you out.

The Firefox series is an excellant set of books should we get into bad times. They will teach you how to survive. This will also be worth it's weight in gold if we get to another depression. Alcohol is a good bartering tool.

We have put up vegetables, can hunt for meat and have the means to protect ourselves and our stores if it came to that.

I totally agree - if we all quit WATCHING them, they'd understand that we want the truth, not their slanted views. They can take the hint when their ratings plummet. ABC is the absolute worst - screaming liberals and don't mind pushing it down your throat. In the meantime, I'm with Jerry - fundamentally the economy is sound and we will bounce back. It's an election year (and an ugly one at that) so it's only natural the media would have you believe the sky is falling.

We do, however, purchase the Sunday Ticket from DirecTV each Fall. Being Vikings fans, it's the only way we are guaranteed to see the game each week. BUT--I could do without TV altogether if I had to. All I see during the day are cartoons anyway!

Canning, gardens, living within your means. These are all no-brainers. I do have to say that the late 80's early 90's may have done in some with the style of thinking. Those that bought the homes, cars, vacations that they couldn't afford are now paying for it. As they should be. Credit cards should be for emergencies.
Bailing out companies by the government and then having those employees go on a $400,000+ vacation is unbelievable. There's not ANY consequences for them. At all. Shame on them...
