online classes: another view

by Faithful Servant
Published Oct. 3, 2008

This semester, I am taking 3 online classes and 1 traditional class. I have preferred online classes mostly due to being able to work it into my schedule but actually find that I tend to learn a lot when I have to sit down and teach something to myself.

My new revelation is that my preference for online classes and the fact that I have worked from home for the last 7 years gives me a handicap when having to work with others. So, while I may be doing well in my traditional class as far as the subject matter, if I was actually graded for working well with others, it probably would be less than an A.

The instructor for the traditional class puts us in groups for everything. Last night, we had to get in a group of four to write a policy regarding e-mail and instant messaging use within our "pretend" company. It would be so much easier for me to just get on Word 2007 and type away on my own. I am so used to having to figure things out on my own and just do what needs to be done that I feel like working in a group slows me down.

That being said, I am so glad that I ended up in this traditional class. I see now how much I need it. I am not good at delegating and actually found out how bad I am at listening. I have to take a step back and not just take over the assignments. I am trying hard to incorporate each group member in the assignments. Most of the people in the class do not even know what instant messaging is, so I am actually becoming the "teacher" in the group (teaching being something I thought I was incapable of doing), just because I have had exposure to technology that they have not.

I just wanted to share this advantage of traditional classes. Who would have ever known that working from home combined with taking online classes could be a handicap!

"Wags, accounting online? YIKES!"

LOL. I am taking accounting online presently. I have to say it is my most time consuming class, but I have been exposed to it before, so that helps.

I think you can...continuing ed courses:

http://www.ed2go.com/edgecombecc/

My current situation won't allow me to spend time on a campus so I just started considering on-line programs. Kaplan has an accredited program that I can complete in as little as one year, but it seems expensive. Anyone have experience with Kaplan University? Also, I would like to start immediately rather than wait until the next semester in January. Can you usually start anytime and complete at your own pace, or do the programs vary? Thanks for any information you may provide.

I was in my early 50's when I went for my Associates, hadn't been in a classroom for decades. Definitely got more out of the traditional classes than the online ones, I much preferred having a teacher and the interaction of the classroom. I hated the online classes, only took them when there was no alternative. My issues were that my fellow students were half my age and weren't familiar with situations that I had lived through, and my knowledge of technology was far behind theirs.

Faithful, it's great that you see what value there is to the classroom setting. Sounds like you are a natural leader.

Wags, accounting online? YIKES! I know I'd never have made it through those courses without a professor holding my hand!

Yeah, I got where I would make suggestions, just to be meet with "I don't know", then I would say, let's do this and see how it works. After the plan was started, they would contribute, I guess they just didn't want to start it for some reason.

I took an online class last fall through Penn State's World Campus. It was tough, but I got an A. Lots of work. Anyway, I'm glad you're enjoying the class. I think it's a testament to the fact that social communication cannot replace real, direct contact. It's a complement, not a replacement. My .02. -Angela

Bubbles, I am guilty of taking over and delegating from the start. I try to make sure they are involved in the decision making progress and also try to make sure I don't end up doing all of the work, even though I type the fastest (because of my occupation - not bragging) and the one that always has a jump drive to save the work, etc., etc.

Have you noticed that your group members can't make up their minds on what to do?

I hate when that happens and I usually take over from there. So far, so good.

My step daughter has online classes at Johnston Community. She does okay on most but Accounting is kicking her but*. She would do much better in a classroom setting where she can interact and ask questions.
