If anyone wants to chat, share notes, express opinions or even "debate" during the Presidential debate, feel free to do so here. I imagine that most of us will be listening intently so I fully understand if comments are scarce.
But if you want to talk after the debate, come see who's here.

McCain did a great job of hammering one phrase, though: "Senator Obama just doesn't understand . . ." If he said it once, he said it a half dozen times. That is his strength, and he need sto capitalize on it. Obama is naive and inexpereineced on a lot of important issues and McCain did a good job of laying that out.
On the economy, McCain spent way to much time trying to toot his own horn and then sound like a democrat. It wasn't efective. Politics is like combat: if you aren't attacking, you're probably losing.

oldschool, I thought that McCain came across as a crotchety old man when he kept saying that. To me it was really condescending and patronizing.
Just shows you how people can see things differently, I guess! I do think, though, that this debate didn't do much to change anyone's minds. I'd call it a draw.

You are right it can be perceived differently, though. I will say I thought Obama came across much better than he usually does off-prompter. If I were a democrat, and considering what you had to work with, I would be happy with your candidate's performance.

When Obama started talking about how he had written a letter on the bailout 2 years ago, McCain should have responded "Well, I didn't write a letter, I sponsored legislation and I went to the floor and demanded action. My party was in power and I fought to get oversight passed. It didn't pass because of opposition from powerful democrat patrons of the mortgage industry. Senator Obama, what did YOU do when YOUR party was in power."
It would have been a lot more effective than blaming Bush, who did far more to try to avoid this problem than Obama.

Like calling someone old & crotchety?
"Just shows you how people can see things differently, I guess!"
I guess so...
"I'd call it a draw."
I'd call it an exercise in futility....
If after two or more years of this never ending campaign and people are still undecided, they're too stupid to be voting for the person who means to be the Preside over my Nation - Please for the sake of your fellow Americans, if you are still undecided, don't wait until the last minute and then make a final decision on the polling day - sit this one out...

v, please don't try to nitpick and spin my comments to prove your point. I stated my opinion that on this occasion and with that particular phrasing, McCain came across as a crotchety old man when he kept using a certain phrase. This was noteworthy for me, because I generally DO NOT think that McCain behaves as a crotchety old man.
I also think that *very* few people commenting here are undecided. That, however, is also just my opinion, so I'd appreciate your not spinning that comment later, too.

Analysis of the debate show these lines for what they are - comments from a consensus-builder. He could have rephrased it into "this is an issue where we have some agreement", or some such, but his wording was much more gracious and pointed out where there is common ground between the two men. Most important of all, these moments in the debate played very well with undecided and independent voters, who react negatively to sniping and one-upmanship. The only people who were gleefully counting these points of agreement as weaknesses for Obama were the GOP analysts back at party headquarters.

Americans are known for screwing up the names of countries and cities all over the world. You only had to listen to the newsies muck up 'Beijing' over and over during the Olympics for evidence of that.
