If the assets were definitely going to appreciate and be sold at a profit, why wouldn't the private companies be hanging on to them?
The truth is some of these investments will be sold for a profit, but a large percentage will not - that's the whole reason Wall St wants to unload this garbage before it kills them. No one knows what kind of return we'll expect - conservative estimates I've read are 60 cents on the dollar. In other words, you and I are still out $280 billion. Even if the investments break even (really, really unlikely), we're losing anyway in the form of interest payments and opportunity cost.
