the masks we wear

Masks are one of the most remarkable manmade creations used in rituals throughout recorded history, used by our ancestors to form a bridge between themselves and the Divine.

Though in modern times the mask has a negative connotation of disguise with the intent to deceive, the ancient world perceived masks as tools of revelation, a connection to invisible powers.

“Identity masks” are often worn to hide the vulnerable parts of ourselves, and most of them are molded in response to societal demands, parental suggestions and peer pressure.

Most of us wear some sort of mask to introduce ourselves to the world. It is not done to deceive anybody; rather, it is an effort we make to ensure that we are accepted and loved by others. Many feel that they could not be accepted for who they truly are, so they slip the mask on. Sometimes they become so used to doing it, that they are unable themselves to differentiate who they truly are from who they believe people want them to be.

We constantly blame the world for not accepting us for who we are, yet we don’t fully accept ourselves. We would rather go on and be who we are not, rather than recognize that the standards we measure ourselves against are manmade and often based on others’ perceptions of good and bad.

The person who lives inside of us may be scared, bruised, shy, but it is rarely bad.

The need to hide behind a mask is self-imposed, and as such it can be eliminated.

If we take a glimpse of our true selves, who are we, really? Are we truly the person we are portraying? Or is that person someone our caregivers and societies wanted it to be? Do we really believe what we claim to believe? Do we really despise what we assert to despise? Or have we grown to believe we do just because it would make someone else happy and proud?

What about you? Who is the true self hidden behind your  mask?

Lolly....... you're Wonderwoman"

Thanks Mark....;D

Squirreling, you are too funny!

Kato.... Dervish, I think you could do that. Yes.

Lolly "Diana Prince"--where is your golden lasso of truth...?

Squirreling...You can play the role of Kato...only if you are playing the role of Bruce Lee's Kato.

well, I am not gonna be some dippy OJ Simpson "oh my god WHAT was that" , is that a THUMP on my A/C unit, perpetually z-list unemployed houseguest Kato Kaelin.

Ewwww...Jeez...

Sometimes I think I know me and then someone tells me different. LOL. Guess I should listen to myself and not what someone else perceives me to be.

I think the older I get, the more open I am with myself and others as to who I am. It is as if...what's the point?

LOL @ the Squirrel.

ROFL at squirrel

Dervish...... tsk tsk tsk....... hee hee.

Jack, I do that too. For many years I didn't realize that I was doing things just because they were the way my parents would have done them; I used to put value to things that really didn't mean much to me, but I felt that society expected them. I don't do that any more, at least not as much. The older I'm getting, the more comfortable I am in being myself.

My oldest son, who is 24, probably more knows who he is than anyone I know. He marches to his own drum. He likes what he likes and that sometimes in not what is currently in vogue. For that matter, he still likes to blow bubbles, of all things. When questioned about it, or perhaps mocked a bit by his friends, with a little smile he just says, "It makes me happy."

Nuff said.... if it makes you happy, and isn't illegal, immoral or fattening, go for it.

my 16 yr old is the same way, Mark. He was compared to House yesterday in school. He honestly doesn't much care what anyone thinks of him as long as his conscience is ok with what he is doing, he's good. He has a strong moral center and if he thinks he's right, will stand his ground.

He took the comparison to House as a compliment,,,lol

I wish I'd had his self confidence at that age.

Me too Mom....... but I know just a little bit about you...... you aren't much different, you hard headed and crazy redhead.

yeah, but it took me YEARS to get to this point.

it is true for me as well, even though i have always been pretty much of an outgoing, what ya see is what ya get kind of person; as i increase in years, i worry less and less about the opinions others have as long as i feel secure and at peace that i am doing the right thing in situations i am presented with from day to day.

"Nuff said.... if it makes you happy, and isn't illegal, immoral or fattening, go for it." mrkagain

Absolutely correct!

Well it's been an interesting trip...... obscene phone calls in Germany, Hawaiian quisine..... you've had a very interesting life.....

Ah... rene.... you got a drink waiting in the other room... lol

lol, Mark, it all almost caused me to have a nervous breakdown! Take an extremely shy, very sheltered small town girl, marry her off to an outgoing, doesn't give a dayum what anyone thinks military man, and within a year plop her in Hawaii, thousands of miles away from anything familiar and, send her hubby off on numerous deployments and tell her to sink or swim.

So YOU were the one that called me when I was in Würzburg. Du bist das Früchtebrot!!

Mom,

You not only learned to swim, you float well too...

it wasn't me, Squirreling!!! I received the obscene phone call, IN GERMAN..took me 10 minutes to figure out it was an obscene phone call...lol. I kept trying to tell the guy (it was in the middle of the night, btw) that I didn't speak German, in the little German I knew, and finally he got to the panting part,,,THEN I knew

I think I have more hats than masks. :)

Well, knowing me I would have cursed him out and hung up, secretly wishing he'd call back.

Hahha

Hope you didn't get an ear infection, MOM. ;)

lol, Squirreling. I still wonder what he could possibly have gotten outta that phone call. Maybe he had a thing for southern accents

yeah

((pant pant pant pant))

Well...Hi Ya'll, whatcha panting' fer?

well dayum dervish.... you want my phone number? Mom's got it... LOL

lol, Ginger...

ME?

Wear a MASK?

Surely, you jest...

no, and stop calling me shirley........

"no, and stop calling me shirley........"

You misunderstood, I said SQUIRRELY

Girl we all feel exactly the same inside. There is no magic moment when we "grow up." We just stay ourselves with our personal set of priorities until life is over. Enjoy.

I consider myself to be an open book. I don't necessarily volunteer info freely, but if asked, I'll share. If I feel that someone is going through a rough time and knowing that others have been there, I'll share. Ex. a friend was having financial troubles and was embarrassed. I shared some stories of my financial troubles in the past. I'm not ashamed. I overcame them and worked them out. But heck, who has never hit a bump in the road. I'm not scared of my blemishes, but I won't flaunt them unless I feel it may help someone else.

With that being said, do I wear a mask here? To a degree. I've not shared some of my 'deepest, darkest' secrets. Some of them are not mine to be sharing. But when I see others in some dilemma that might be comparable, I'll happily offer advice based on experience and don't mind sharing that openly.

Did ANY of that make a bit of sense?

It made a lot of sense, rocknhorse, thank you for sharing that.

My true self is the one that everyone sees and hears. I think hiding your "true self" away is dishonest and weak.

"What about you? Who is the true self hidden behind your mask?"

What you see, is what you get,I'm a two-bagger......

I am wearing a happy mask right now...it is cracking...

"It's easy to look at people and make quick judgments about them, their present and their pasts, but you'd be amazed at the pain and tears a single smile hides. What a person shows to the world is only one tiny facet of the iceberg hidden from sight. And more often than not, it's lined with cracks and scars that go all the way to the foundation of their soul" Acheron Parthenopaeus

NCMOM...I think that quote speaks volumes. Especially for those that may have had a lifetime of constantly being hurt...a lot of times by those assumed to be trusted friends/family (wearing masks of their own for their own gain at someone elses expense). That kind of mask is a form of protection of which I can relate...and one that is very hard to remove over time.
