Press release from the bev perdue campaign:
Pat McCrory and Jim Black: The Ties that Bind
McCrory & Black political and golfing buddies; Head of Black’s legal defense fund
a paid advisor to McCrory campaign
While Pat McCrory has consistently attacked the “culture of corruption” in Raleigh, he has been silent about his long-time relationship with former Speaker Jim Black, and about Stan Campbell’s role as a paid campaign advisor.
During this “Agenda Charlotte” episode, Pat McCrory heaps praise upon Jim Black, and they discuss their golf outings and working together as teammates. View video here.
What Pat McCrory also doesn’t want you to know is that Stan Campbell – the man who ran Jim Black’s secretive legal defense fund – has been one of McCrory’s paid political advisors during his campaign for governor.
- “Campbell has been the fund's trustee since its inception, meaning that he maintains its bank account, signs its checks and is eligible to be paid from the fund.” [Charlotte Observer, 10/17/06]
And it was Stan Campbell who acted as a spokesman when Pat McCrory filed for Governor and continued to serve as a paid consultant.
- “The McCrory campaign filed paperwork with the State Board of Elections showing the transfer of contributions from his mayoral campaign account to his new gubernatorial account. McCrory adviser Stan Campbell said Wednesday that McCrory's campaign contacted the board to ensure the transfer was legal.” [AP, 1/23/08]
- “[McCrory] has been paying $3,500 a month to former Charlotte City Council member Stan Campbell for consulting.” [Charlotte Observer, 4/30/08]
Campbell is well-known in the Charlotte inner circles as a “political fixer,” and he and the Mayor have been close for years.
- “Campbell calls McCrory ‘the kind of guy (you'd) like to have for a fraternity brother.’” [Charlotte Observer, 9/17/95]
“Pat McCrory talks about the ‘culture of corruption’ in Raleigh, yet he hires its biggest defender as a top consultant and spokesperson for his campaign,” said Perdue spokesman David Kochman.
