embracing change

We are afraid of change. It's human nature. The fear of change—the fear of the unknown—is so great that we continue to live within the constraints of our own invisible walls.

Force of habit is a considerable influence in our culture; habit is synonymous with stability while change is disconcerting. It stirs unrest, like a storm stirs the sediment in the sea; until the waters calm down and the sediment settles back to the bottom, the water appears cloudy.

We are very much creatures of habit. We eat, work and sleep at specific times, and have squeezed in multiple other activities, with little to no room for change.

In the midst of this structured life, most of us inevitably arrive at a point where change is necessary for survival. Because we never learned to easily accept change, we panic when we feel forced to make important decisions. Instead of embracing change as a new opportunity filled with adventure, we become almost paralyzed with fear.

Controlled by fear, we dig in and stay put, even if the walls are closing in. We stay in miserable life situations, feeling we don't have the strength to change anything, until something pushes us to our limit and we must make a choice.

Many times our fears aren't readily apparent. Sometimes we know what we want and pursue it with confidence, with no doubts. Or so we think. No matter how sure we are in our minds about a goal or desire, fears often lurk beneath the surface.

As scary as change can be, it doesn't have to be undertaken all at once. Sometimes small steps in the right direction are more beneficial than an explosive life-altering effort. Taking small steps, one day at a time, is less traumatic than rebuilding our entire world from scratch.

If we can learn to tap into our innate wisdom and intuition, we will gradually become able to discern the difference between our fears based on insecurities versus our soul trying to steer us into the flow of least resistance.

Change, and the strength to surrender to it, are an important part of our lives and should be viewed as an opportunity to experience wonderful things yet unseen.

DAvid Bowie, Change

Oh yeah

Mm

Still dont know what I was waiting for

And my time was running wild

A million dead-end streets and

Every time I thought Id got it made

It seemed the taste was not so sweet

So I turned myself to face me

But Ive never caught a glimpse

Of how the others must see the faker

Im much too fast to take that test

Ch-ch-ch-ch-changes

(turn and face the strain)

Ch-ch-changes

Dont want to be a richer man

Ch-ch-ch-ch-changes

(turn and face the strain)

Ch-ch-changes

Just gonna have to be a different man

Time may change me

But I cant trace time

I love that song, Lolly!

This blog post comes at a very vital moment. I have a change to make and have been dreading it. Maybe if I embrace it, it will become a new adventure instead of a time of fear.

Thank you for your wise words. Enjoy the day!

Change is always scary. I think change is coming my way soon. i hope that I can handle it when it comes. But I do think that it is almost time to get it in gear anyway.

Change IS always scary! There are so many factors at work, at all times. Think about a mother who wants to get a better job; in the beginning, the new job may require longer hours, increased commitment and more energy invested. Although she knows that in the long run it will benefit the family, she feels that, for the moment, she is taking away from everybody, and feels guilty.

....... Sandra, your blogs are sometimes unsettling to me... and comforting at the same time.

Thanks...

Love it! I look for these every morning.

Beth

I am facing major changes in my business. I had one employee that has been with me since the begining. About 6 years. He was a very good employee and we got along great. He is going through some personal issues{his new girlfriend is jealous of our relationship, which is strictly business} and has decided not to work for me. I am learning how heavily I relied on him and I miss him. This is a change I would have preferred not to have had. So, I am now training a new guy and in the end it will probably be better because I overpaid the other guy and let him get away with way too much. But, in the mean time I am having to work too hard and am not embracing this change. I wish my old guy would come back.

Very nicely written Sandra. Dealing with change is a weakness of mine in part because I am very content with my life. Changes in life both large and small are inevitable, but I confess that sometimes I wish time would slow down a little bit. We need to expect and prepare for change without missing the moments we are living in the present.

Karen, as you said, the old employee was overpaid and had personal issues. It would only have been a matter of time, if he stayed, before his personal life would beging to trickle down into the business relationship. We went through a similar situation with one of our employees, and were very unsettled in the beginning, as we had to roll our sleeves and take on the whole workload until the new employee was trained. Once the new employee was trained and ready to go, however, things were better than ever, and we realized how blinded we were when we felt the old employee was vital to the business. Remember, flexibility of thought is a very important tool to face life's storms with.
