house: dry wall almost complete
Published Sep 20, 2008Views: 464
We continue to make our baby steps toward completion of this project. With the exception of the garage and around the tub and shower, dry wall is hung and we have two coats of tape/mud applied. We would not be at this stage were it not for the wonderful help of friends. A friend volunteered to do the taping and mudding and he's been a tremendous help. I feel truly blessed by the friends and family that have given up their time to help us with this project.
The kitchen is coming along very nicely. I'm so excited about this room. I love to cook and having a room that has been so generously designed and built 'just for ME!' is rather overwhelming. Again, I can't express enough how lucky we are to have the friends we have.
In the kitchen, we decided to cover the chimney. I know this was not exactly my first choice, but based on the design/layout, as well as trying to restore the chimney and the time that would take, it really did seem the best choice for the moment. We know it's there and maybe at some point in the future, we'll uncover it, but for now, it was just easier to cover it.
The cabinets will be bright white w/the iron "barn door" pulls and hinges. I was able to find matching sets, so I will have plenty for the cabinets that were built. I will also have a built-in china cabinet. I'm SO excited about this. I have my grandparent's china that they bought when they married (my grandmother is now 98). It's not the complete set - several pieces have been broken along the way. But I have plenty of pieces to display. I love using these dishes when I can. I only use them for special occasions and when I do, I feel a special bond to my grandparents. To have a cabinet built just so that I can display them is so nice.
We are in the process of deciding on tile for the master shower and tub surround in the kid's bathroom. We may attempt the surround ourselves, but right now, we think it would be most prudent to hire someone to do the shower. We've met with a couple of tile contactors and have a couple more to meet. Hopefully the price will be right and we'll leave this project to a professional.
I'm still having fun, but I'm definitely ready for this to be finished. I must say, though, that I think we're doing OK time-wise. The majority of this has been done by us, with the help of family and friends. We've hired contractors for certain aspects, but we've done the bulk of it ourselves. Last week marked 1 year since the house was actually moved. Yes, it's been longer with the prep (cutting the trees and preparing the house and land for the move), but as for the house rennovation itself, we are really only a year into and I think we've come a LONG way in a year. I'm rather proud of what we've done and how much I've learned.

Also, we have put the tile backer board around the tub in the kid's bathroom. As I said, we will probably attempt the tile ourselves. If that works out, we may become more adventurous in other rooms of the house.
I know we still have the garage to dry-wall and about two walls among the bathrooms (we're leaving them open until the tiling is complete so that those areas will be more easily accessible). But I can say w/complete confidence that I will NEVER go into the dry wall business. It's OK a little bit here or there. But doing an entire house? I'm glad it's almost over!

Have you decided on countertops yet?

But, if you have seen the commercial and know what I am talking about, that may be an option for you.

Something to consider. If you ever intend to upgrade to granite, etc. in the future, the solid countertop material (Corian, etc.) would seem to involve less ruckus to replace with the granite than laminate would.
That might be completely wrong though. Building things is NOT my strong point.
