Charlotte, N.C. – The following is a statement from Mayor Pat McCrory, the Republican nominee for governor, in response to news that state officials will begin moving patients from Dorothea Dix state mental hospital in Raleigh to a new hospital in Butner in October:
“Earlier this month, Cherry Hospital lost accreditation and funding from the federal government for mismanagement and for endangering the lives of its patients. This will cost North Carolina taxpayers approximately $800,000 per month.
“Now we learn that our state leaders are marching forward to close Dorothea Dix Hospital, which is accredited and receives federal funds. This makes absolutely no sense. North Carolina’s mental health system springs from one crisis to the next and people are suffering as a result. I call on Lt. Gov. Beverly Perdue to stop ignoring this problem and join me to help protect our state’s most vulnerable citizens.”
Background
On June 23, McCrory wrote to Gov. Mike Easley, Lt. Gov. Beverly Perdue, Senate President Pro Tem Marc Basnight and House Speaker Joe Hackney to urge them to keep Dorothea Dix Hospital open and adequately staffed for another year. McCrory argued this would give the state’s next governor the opportunity to implement necessary mental health reforms. He also called on the legislature to keep Dorothea Dix open during a June 2 news conference in Raleigh.
