shrimp - are you buying our great east coast shrimp

Published Sep. 14, 2008

I typically buy shrimp at the market once or twice a month. For a long time I did not pay much attention to the origin of the shrimp. Most times I either was getting East Coast Shrimp or Gulf Shrimp.  I am hearing that our Shrimpers are really having difficult times. So my purpose for this blog is to encourage all of you that buy shrimp, to please buy our great Carolina shrimp. You might have to pay two or three dollars more a pound, but just think about what that is worth. It means jobs for Americans, it means eating product from our own shores.  How much extra is that anyway? Unless you eat shrimp everyday, two or three dollars extra, is money well spent to keep our own shrimpers going.

Part of the struggle of course is with fuel costs, but the bigger challenge is  cheap imports. Is it really worth it to save a couple dollars and buy shrimp from China, or Thailand, or Viet Nam?   I am not knocking their shrimp, but I figure we buy enough of their stuff.

Usually they have signs that indicate the country of origin of shrimp. If there is no sign, I always ask.  I love me a bunch of that great Carolina shrimp.

I beg to differ. I was in three grocery stores this weekend, and all three had local NC shrimp.

I beg to differ with you and I said most seafood, not all. Please pay attention to the discussion, this is how arguements start

Earp's Seafood on South Saunders Street is a great place to get local (NC and SC) seafood. It is at the corner of South Saunders and Mayfair (?) which is the road that if you follow it west comes out to Lake Wheeler Road right across from the Farmer's Market. There is also another seafood retailer at that intersection that I go to as a back-up. There was a new seafood shop that opened in Cary at Maynard and Chatham but when I went there it was all foreign stuff.

Having been raised on the Outer Banks, I am mighty particular about my seafood. So, Earp's it is for me!

I support NC having a good fishing industry, but I've gotten that sandy inlet/river shrimp for the last time. They need to be more careful about what they are selling.

If you're ever in California, try to find a restaurant that serves "abalone" as an entre. Shuldn't have no problem from the Central coast on up, but I'm not sure if it's available in the southern shoreline there. A REAL treat and like nothing you've ever tasted (at least like nothing I've ever tasted) before. Abalone, a univalve used to be prretty easy to "harvest" at low tide along the San Simeon to Morro Bay rocky shores when we were kids, but nowadays with all the regulations and such, I don't know if it can be done except commercially by divers.

Alright you are beginning to sound like an ad for the Bubba Gump Shrimp Company. I will pass this information on to others. It is a good thought.

Applies to all oysters doesn't it..has to do with their reproductive cycle. I eat NC shrimp, fish, oysters and whatever seafood I can get my hands on. I was raised on it. When I was a child, my father fished alot and my mom froze the catch so we always had seafood. It was alot more plentiful back then. He would bring home shrimp and buckets of oysters and he went floundering...geez, I miss my dad!

"I believe the oyster thing with "r's" only refers to NC oysters. Gulf Coast and imported are ok..."

I don't know about the imported, but it does apply to Gulf Coast as well. Lived in the Florida panhandle for a number of years and they preach that all the way around the Gulf. You used to not even be able to buy them unless the month ended in R

TOm Robinson's in Carrboro...all local, only open on Thursday-Sat.

I believe the oyster thing with "r's" only refers to NC oysters. Gulf Coast and imported are ok...

Thanks, squirreling

"You will have a hard time finding local seafood anywhere, most is imported from China or Russia these days."

I beg to differ. I was in three grocery stores this weekend, and all three had local NC shrimp.
