helpful tips for golo bloggers

Good morning GOLO:

I just want to take a few minutes to share a few helpful tips for long-time and new bloggers that may draw more readers to your posts.

I know we all have come across blog posts that we think will be interesting only to open it up and be completely turned off by the formatting, or simply overwhelmed by the length.

Remember that first impressions have a lot of impact, so the goal is to make the post easy on the eyes.

Here's how you can do that.

  • Take advantage of the bullets and numbering features.
    • This is very helpful when you have long lists.
  • Use bold or italics, or a combination of both to highlight important info.
  • Use LINKS to send readers to the article or other content you're referencing. Make the link bold if you want.
    • You can also opt to use only a portion of the article  to keep your post shorter and encourage people to "click here" for the  complete story.
  • Link to your previous posts. If you blog often about a similar topic, try something like: As I said in my blog: Comments and Abuse...
    • While many people may be familiar with your blogs, new people are reading all the time so don't assume they know all about you.
  • Mention your groups when relevant.
  • Send people to your image galleries.

These are just a few ideas and I know that blogging is not one-size-fits-all. So use what works for you and ditch the rest.

And if you have any other hlepful tips for fellow bloggers, feel free to share.

Have a great day!

Angela

Great information Angela, the learning process with computers is an ongoing endeavor for myself. I only started learning how to use a computer about six years ago and I learn something new everyday.

One thing I would like to encourage is the use of the "Open in New Window" option when linking a URL in a story. It is really irritating to hit a link and watch the blog disappear on me.

I would even go as far to say that WRAL should make that the default option and if someone has an overwhelming and compelling reason to not use it, they have to make an effort to do so.

Where do you set those attributes? Are there instructions that I missed?

Tired: When you are in your blog window, creating the blog there are tools just below the box that look very similar to the tools you're used to working with in Microsoft Word.

Steve: Request noted.

Being new to computers I don't know how to do this.

I see... It is not available in "Add Comment". That is where I thought the discussion was talking about.

Thanks.

Lady...you have come a long way in the last year...You will catch on quick to this as well *smiles*

Ladyblue.

if you want to make a link within a blog, you highlight the short string of text you wish to turn into a link, then while that text is highlighted, click on the Link button just below your text box. A window will pop open. Type in the FULL URL and select whether you would like the link to open a new window or simply use the existing window. When that is done, click on Finished or OK or whatever that button says and you now have a clickable link in your blog.

Already so much to learn! I just signed in today and this is very helpful.

Thank you for the Welcome email and for including this link in it.
