remembering 9/11 | where were you?

Published Sep. 10, 2008

I've heard stories throughout my life about the whereabouts of family members on the day JFK was killed. I've heard similar stories about the day Martin Luther King Jr. was killed. I can probably recount my grandmother's entire day verbatim. That's how many times I've heard about it.

My future grandchildren will likely know the story of where I was when I learned about the twin towers and how their mother who was 13-months-old at the time was literally yanked from the changing table and allowed to crawl around the house with a great deal of freedom that morning because I was in shock, glued to the TV and calling everyone I could.

I won't go into the rest because this will be the longest blog ever if I do. But I'd love to hear your stories. Where were you when you heard, and what do you remember most about that fateful day?

I was in a college class and another professor came to the door to spread the word among the faculty. Our prof. released us and we went to the student lounge, turned on the tv and watched the second tower get hit.

I was at work. No radio or tv to watch. Someone from the office saw the news on their internet and told someone. The news spread throughout the company in no time. I was a nervous wreck by 5 o'clock, wondering just how bad it was. My imagination fell short of the truth. At home that evening glued to the news, I sat there filling up with grief as the details of all the dying Americans unfolded into a dream-like reality. As with most greiving, anger plays a role at some point. But on this day it came into play early, and still has a place in my thoughts to this very day.

as a country never have to witness anything that horrific ever again. We are so blessed to live in this great country. I called my best friend and we were glued to the television all afternoon and cried and cried. Today, September 11, 2008, I am still a teacher assistant in first grade and my teacher talked to our students this morning and briefly touched on the subject of 911..she tried to keep it simple yet try to help them understand what happened. A student replied "I wasn't even born yet in 2001!" and it really touched my heart when I realized that those innocent children in our class today have never known what it was like before 911....and that really makes me sad. Godbless all those who perished that tragic day, their families and this great nation....we will never forget.

On September 11, 2001, I was a teacher assistant (and still am) in a "classroom full of innocent children"...as Alan Jackson's song most poignantly puts it. I was about to go on my break and decided to check my e-mail and there it was on yahoo.com news. I didn't fuly comprehend what I read as I didn't even know, at the time, what the "Twin Towers" were. I had never heard of them. I thought maybe an amateur pilot had gotten off course and tragically hit the building. I still couldn't fathom what had happened. I went to the teachers lounge and by that time everyone was talking about it and totally in shock. Our librarian set up a television in another room for staff to watch as some faculty had loved ones there. I don't think it really "hit home" until that afternoon when I arrived home and turned on the television and kept seeing that horrible video play over and over. All I could think about was those poor souls that were trapped inside and their families watching in horror. I pray we

I was teaching my Kindergarten class. The librarian came to my door and quietly told me that the Twin Towers had been hit by an airplane. I turned on the radio and listened to the news as the children were doing their work. I looked at their precious, innocent faces and felt so scared for them and for me. Those few moments are forever etched in my mind.

My company was hosting an interview day at the Courtyard Marriott in Grand Rapids, Michigan. We were ramping up to start interviews and were having coffee in the hotel lobby with CNN on. They broke through with the story of a plane hitting the WTC, and as we watched the footage, we saw the second plane hit live. As you can all imagine, the interviews with the folks who were already there were a little, um, strained.

We had a rental car to get around Michigan (we had other interview days in Detroit and Flint) and ended up keeping it to drive home. We picked up four other people who were heading south, and carpooled back to the Carolinas via stops in Kentucky and Tennessee. It was actually kind of a fun situation, road tripping with people with a togetherness born out of necessity and shared disbelief at what had just happened.

she said "Its a beautiful day outside. Not a cloud in the sky. However there will be no flights today because of the events at the WTC." He broke down. That was "his" city and he had relatives that worked there. I remember how quiet it was that night. There was no traffic on the roads, no planes over head and it was just eerie. Dominick was 10 months old. That Thanksgiving we went to Long Island and crossing the George Washington Bridge (GWB) was scary. Off on the horizon you could still see the buildings smoldering. The night we were leaving to go back to Syracuse we saw on the news that there was a bomb threat on the GWB and they would be pulling over trucks. We spent 5 hours on the bridge. It was petrifying.

I was working at a Borders bookstore in Syracuse, NY. I was at the downstairs information desk when Dave DeAngry (which isn't his real name) came out of the back room and said "I was on the phone with store support and they had to hang up on me because they had to evacuate the World Trade Center Store. There was just a plane crash." It didn't really set in till a customer came up and asked me where our books on car repairs were. I took him upstairs and he asked me if I'd heard. He was very nonchalant so I wasn't thinking that anything major just happened. My friend, Ryan, came out of the back room freaking out because his girlfriend was going to NYU and was living right next to the WTC and he couldn't get in touch with her. The mall fell quiet. I went into the break room and they had the news on and everyone was silent. Dom's Dad, David, called me crying. He had woken up and turned on the Weather Channel to see what it was going to be like and the lady's face was flushed and

I realized today while I was talking to the students about Patriot Day, that most of them weren't even born when this tragedy struck. They will only "hear" about it. It was kinda surreal for me today to realize how much time has passed. Seems like it just happened.

I was teaching second graders. I was taking the students into the Library for their weekly Library time and the librarian was over to the side with a TV on. I saw it, but didn't realize what I was watching. I thought perhaps it was a movie of some sort. Then I went back down the hallway to my classroom and other teachers were talking about it. Since that time was our planning time, we huddled in one classroom and watched in horror as the second tower fell. I'm emotional anyway, but that day I cried the most sorrowful tears, just thinking of all the people who died that day and the families left behind. We weren't allowed to talk about it to the students or to have TVs on while they were around so the rest of the day went by like a bad dream. Weeks later, we were on the playground and there were HUGE military planes flying low to the ground. Everyone froze and the first thing that went through everyone's minds was what happened on 9-11. I'll never forget that day...
