generation x and baby boomers in the workplace
by Golo Managing EditorPublished Sep. 8, 2008
What would you consider the biggest differences between Generation X'ers and Baby Boomers in the workplace?
Some say that Generation X does not understand company loyalty, but many of us saw our parents work at the same companiy for years, only to be laid-off in the end with nothing more than a gold watch to show for it.
They say we're the "me" generation, but didn't the baby boomers raise us to believe that we were special and could create our own destiny?
X'ers...Did they build us up to shoot us down later?
Boomers...are we too full of ourselves?
I want to hear from both generations on this one. What are your thoughts?

I work for one of the major employers at RTP and, worldwide, they have made it absolutely clear that rewards such as bonuses and promotions will NOT be determined by loyalty. They acknowledge that the market and the workplace are dynamic and subject to rapid change. They aren't loyal to the workforce and don't expect loyalty in exchange. But they do expect a professional relationship for as long as that lasts and for the end to be managed with dignity no matter who ends it.

Second, schools are much harder than they were 20 yrs ago. My daughter is in the 6th grade doing things I didn't do until 9th or 10th. So I don't agree that schools are watered down. I do think that NCLB has created a loophole for children not to learn all the extra things, though.

I work my behind off at any company I've worked with. A lot were temp positions because they don't want to pay benefits. I've been laid off. I've had to leave because the company had no $$ for raises. I had to work 2 jobs to make ends meet. Cost of living goes up but not the pay. I get compliments all the time on my work but compliments don't pay the bills. I am not whining, just stating facts. I try to teach the next generation to strive harder to get where they want to be. (ie my daughter and her friends)

Willow, perhaps you forget that may become a reality because there are SO MANY of us, and Congress has put off for YEARS fixing the problem. It is NOT because we are special or piggish or getting more than we deserve. I've worked all my life & you're darned right; I'll take my share that's due to me in SS & Medicare benefits.
My problem with some of these benefits: if you're rich, don't draw them as you don't need them like millions DO, especially in today's economy: should be earnings limitations.
