state politicos pay increase

Published Sep. 8, 2008

The muffled movement to raise General Assembly pay – muffled because lawmakers fear a politically radioactive issue – has gained more momentum this year, thanks to another branch of government.

This is the opening sentence of a story posted on this site earlier today, and on the N&O site. I'm surprised I've not heard more about it here on golo

In the begining it was a public service and civic obligation to country...now its a profession.

...."Per diem is a little over $100 a day, not a couple hundred. And they get it whether they are in Raleigh or not -"

Lets pay em $200.00 a day to stay OUT of Raleigh....we would ALL have MORE $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$!!!!!!!!!!!!

Per diem is a little over $100 a day, not a couple hundred. And they get it whether they are in Raleigh or not - when the Leg. is in session. They are vested in the state employees retirement system at half the time of a rank and file employee. There have been some cutbacks in this, but lobbyists and others still pay for many meals, etc. Many are lawyers and/or self-employed. Most, by our standards, are wealthy - which is actually a fallacy in the system - you almost have to be to be able to afford to get elected and to serve. My issue is it appears they are again (as with the lottery) trying to do this behind closed doors. And to possibly attach it to a bill that most people support. Then a possiblity becomes - only when the bill is passed and enacted, does it come out they've voted themselves a pay raise.

Sin Amor - perhaps. There is certainly a balancing act. However, I think that the kneejerk reaction from the public, particularly in uncertain economic times, is that elected officials shouldn't get a pay increase. This isn't necessarily wrong, but at the same time, you must remember that you cannot get Filet Mignon for the price of a Big Mac.

They may get paid under $14k for Legislative work during session. But they also get a per diem of a couple of hundred dollars a day (including weekends) the entire time they are in session. Probably a few other perks that we don't know about, too. Additionally, many of them are self-employed so actually get paid there too.

Then again, if the position pay is too attractive, people will only want the job for the money, and not to make positive changes.

They shouldn't be the ones to give themselves a raise. It should be put to the voters. If they don't deserve it, they don't get it and THEY dont' get to decide. I personally feel that if they think the current "minimum wage" is enough to live on, they should make that. If it's good enough for the workers doing the "real" work, then it should be good enough for those folks in cushy offices and tax payer air conditioned buildings. Let them earn minimum wage and watch how fast that number jumps up.

Wait - they don't have the money to give my wife the bonus they promised her, but they have money to give themselves a raise?

Do you know how much they are paid? I am not a fan of bloated government payrolls, but when it comes to leaders, we need to make sure that we offer sufficient incentive to attract quality. All you have to do is look at the WCPSS Board of Ed to find out what happens when you offer $18,000/year for what is almost a full time job.
